can anybody please tell me in technical terms why my radio goes nuts sometimes when my phone changes base towers even when it is off?

edit: when the radio is off, not the phone

Like static?
That's normal, phone interference.

When the radio's off, the amp is still on (at least it is with the Mcintosh) that's why you're hearing something even with the radio off.

As Clarence said. Where exactly is your phone when this is happening?

All GSM phones do it. It happens whenever they are talking to a base station.
It is because the radio transmitter in your phone is only transmitting briefly for 1/200th of a second every second. This can induce 200Hz interference in adjacent wiring.
(CDMA phones transmitted continuously, but at a lower power, so they didn't do it. I'm not sure if G3 is the same as GSM in this respect.)
