Guard Rolling

Postby Subie Boy » Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:07 am

Hi all

Its been a while since my last post. Well, my tyres are due for a change in the next 5-6k (stockies) and since I have done 41k in the car, I was thinking maybe its time for me to get new set of rims.

I am looking at getting 20s....and there are some that I have my eyes on. The only question is that they come in 20 x 8.5 offset. Now, those of you who has 8.5 offset, did you have to roll your guards, and if you did can you please explain the process to me and where to get it done. I was thinking of getting my wheels either from Eagle Tyres or Ozzy Tyres as I believe these two have good reputations....from what I hear anyways.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

If you go with ozzy, they do guard rolling (they rolled mine) so talk to them and they will take care of you.

do they guarantee their work

As in if they F*%K up will they replace ur guard..?

when i was 17, me and my mates rolled our guards on our 1st cars ourselves..(mind u they were shitboxes so we didnt care)

But the point is, they came out pretty damn good....

Involves puttin alot of weight on 1 corner of thecar, and jammin a metal bar inbetween the tyre and the guard and rolling forward or backward, wateva end u start on....

The trick is to go slow, and increase the weight on each pass and be patient...

The guards came out fine...no ripples or anything....

Its the teenagers way of doin things bodgy, just like choppin springs

Ahh, I remember those days. Had a wooden baseball bat which I used to roll between the guard and the tire. Scary as hell because I was doing this to my 3 year old Honda Legend. Ended up with the paint chipping in the end, but it was behind the wheel well so it was all good.

Now it's all high tech, where they take a guard rolling device and slowly roll the guards slowly. If done properly, they will use a heat gun to warm up the area first, and every few rolls.

I had mine done at both Tempe Tires and Wholesale Suspension. Both did excellent jobs. Tempe makes you sign a waiver saying they will do their best but don't come crying to them if your paint starts to chip. Everyone else just advises you of the risks involved, but I don't think anyone guarantees that their work won't cause paint damage.

They never mentioned anything about guarantee's if they mess up. But i'm sure they have a clause in the back of their invoice somewhere saying their not responsible. They did a great job anyways so i'm not worried.
