Took the Lib to my long standing faithful mechanic who runs his own business and is a real car enthusiast. Lots of expereince as a race mech with half a dozen trips to Bathurst (both as mech and driver in improved production cars)
I find he always gives the attention you want and services are done properly - door stikers are lubed, tyre pressures adjusted, wheel rotations, washer fluid, brake fluid etc all topped up, new windscreen rubbers etc etc. No grubby finger marks, covers over the seats and foot wells.
Anyway, calls me when its ready (before promised time) and begins to tell me how impressed he is with the car. "What a beautiful sports car to drive" he comments. I love it - torque everywhere, phenomenal braking (remember he races will Girlocks) and still is a great daily driver.
He is amazed at the brakes and comments how the HSV and FPV cars suck with the fitment of pads to discs and the pads extend outside the disc area and cause uneven wear and squealing probs.
This comes from a guy who races Commodores
I thanked him for the feedback and said how I'd have considered an R36 Passat if they were out b4 I bought the Lib and he said "no way"!
Lots of VW dramas come through his shop - all the euros are a downright pain in the arse to service and the costs are $$$$. Has two customers with the latest model VW's (one Passat and one GTi Golf) The Passat DSG is a shit of a thing to service and requires a lot of attention, the engine has a bad idle circuit drama that 3 software upgrades havent fixed and the GTi goes through brakes like you wouldn't believe (always rotors as well) The Gti goes like a steam train but does not have the finesse of the Lib.
The software and computer wizardry in these is such that he does the fluid services and brakes etc, but still recommends his customers visit a dealer every second service for the factory software checks to be done.
Just nice to have unbiased feedback and concretes your decision
