Steering Wheel Upgrade

Postby Shakibsaifi » Tue Aug 26, 2014 1:30 pm

after 5 hours of searching im still left with no answer.
essentially i want my steering wheel to go from this

to this

Image

Firstly my current steering wheel has no audio control, I've read on various websites on how to rewire them to fit mac head units, but I'm using an after-market head unit.

Secondly I'm going from a preface non-momo to a post-face gtb momo wheel (i believe) will this fit.

Thirdly presuming the silver plates on the steering wheel are audio control and cruise control, what are the buttons on the bottom left and bottom right.

thanks for your time

Afaik preFL to postFL steering wheel swap is a no go area.
Different mounts for the S# kill mode button on the lower RHS and the info buttons on the LHS...
TBH If you were capable of doing the swap (anythings possible in the long run) you'd be posting a how-to.

My advice: get a preFL wheel w/ SWC's, get the appropriate SWC interface for your HU if available.
Eg Axxess, Alpine SWC-C10, Joycon etc...

What HU is it?

Better still get a preFL DAMD or PROVA wheel, some preFL SWC's and the appropriate interface FTW :)

DAMD= leather
PROVA=alcantara
Huge difference :)

PreFL is much different from postFL:

Lower button mounts (1 tab vs 2 tabs), clock spring, SWC config, airbag config and plugs etc...
Heck maybe the splines could be the same I've never tried (yet).

The MY2009 Factory Service Manual I have says the lower left buttons are the Multi-Information Display Selector
The lower right button is the SI-DRIVE (SUBARU Intelligent Drive) S# Switch.

Please do not ask what is the Multi-Information Display? The FSM says
"Multi-information Display (Odo/Trip indicator, Instant fuel economy/Aver- LCD
age fuel economy, Ambient air temperature/Continuous driving time, Drivable
distance, Current time, SI-DRIVE mode, Malfunction warning display)"

Sounds like a beefed up trip computer?

The multi-information display is the little window in the dash under the revs meter, you press the buttons and alternate between odometer, SI-Drive mode, fuel consumption etc. Dunno if pre-fl has em

Anyhow I have most of the postFL parts available if you want to try...
Momo (worn paint on the leather), airbag, SWC's, BT style info buttons.

The SWC/info button set is from a later postFL with BT integration.
I can't remember if it included an S# button or not.

Pm me for more info :)

In order to get the wheel remote controls to work with the head unit you'll need something like a Axxess Metra ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface

These things are programable and allow you to retain the factory controls with aftermarket head units, from a lot of research I found this one to be one of the best, there is close to no lag when using it (which seemed to be a big problem with other unit).

What head unit are you currently running?

Thanks for all the help. I'll leave this for a later date when I get more comfortable with changing my steering wheel, I've got a cheap China double din only just realising it has no option for steering controls.
