I'd guess:
the big female goes to the hub "out" port (eg via a USB male to USB mini)
the small male goes to the nexus
and the small female receives power from the 12-5V buck converter (via a nexus charge cable) :)

Agreed. But where does the usbDAC run from? Thats my question. If there was no HDD, the USBDAC woukd plug in there. So do I run the USBDAC from the hub or solder another female USB connection in to run that from its own....

The DAC would plug into a large USB female in the USB hub ie: one of the "in" ports.

Here's an example of a USB hub with a USB mini "out":

Okay, nice, so the drawing I've got is correct. Alls I was basically asking as if the DAC would run out of the hub, as well as a hard drive. Cause if the HDD wasn't being used, the DAC would go direct into the large female plug on the Y cable.

I'm sure i'll nut it all out once I've got the rest of the bits, which should be turning up over the next week. I do plan on testing it all before it goes into the car.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!

Your illustration is exactly how it goes together. Well done.

Thank you for the confirmation man, that's really all I was after! haha I was racking my brain the other day wondering if the DAC was running off the hub or not.

And cheers, I needed to do something up, there's no sense in listing all the gear if you've got no idea how it's all going together come time to install. I'm surprised that the amount of installs of these that have been done, here and on other forums, that nothing like this has been produced, which would make procuring all the required parts SO easy.

I had every intention of doing something like that... Kind of a Nexus sticky thread with the basics and links but never got around to it. Might do it one day if I'm bored.

Matt you need to scan using Poweramp.. It'll pick up your folders on the HDD and add them to the playlist in Poweramp. If you've got no luck I can check it out one day if we're around each other at some stage.

Would definitely help, I mean the thread was created years ago and people like yourself part out/sell their cars and then either lose interest or forget about the setup. Would be handy, especially as the cars become more affordable, this kind of thing will pop up fairly frequently I would think for those that want to jump in and give it a crack, much like myself. Handy to have as much info as possible there, at least for people who read through the thread so any issues can be ironed out!

Tips like your media scan are handy too!

I thought about doing this myself, and probably will, I've got plenty of time over the next couple of weeks.

I just didn't want to put it together before I had it tested and installed so I was sure it all worked.

I think photos are better. Some of the links I was looking at when I read through all 30 pages of this thread were no longer available. Photos of the stuff (The Y cable especially) will be much handier, as there are a couple options with parts.

The main question I have is in regards to future proofing.
It can be assumed that a nexus 7 won't last forever.

Obviously can't predict the future of device design and so on, but does anyone know if any other brand or type that may work if the 7" nexus became hard to find in the future?

Provided that the mounting system you choose is fairly easily altered (i.e you're not aralditing the brackets directly to the tablet) this shouldn't be an issue I wouldn't think. I've seen some people using the Samsung 7" tablet on other forums online, but I'm unsure as to how well the ROM works on those.

That aside, at least the 7" tablet looks like it's here to stay - quite a popular size.

Just had a thought, what happens with the interior light dimmer that is set up via the satnav? Do the settings hold as to what was set up last before the unplug?
