Looking at buying 04 Lib GT. Concerned about e idle problems

Postby y-b-jls-4 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 2:28 pm

Hi guys I'am looking to upgrade from a 2002 lexus is200 to something faster such as the 2.0t liberty gt. I was all convinced about going out to buy one until I came across several liberty forums where some people have been troubled with the engine idle problems and still haven't been able to resolve them. Just wondering if this is a common issue with all the liberty gt's and being a fussy owner I dont want such an issue to put me off..... cheers

No idle problems here either. That said I don't think my 04 GT is especially refined at idle especially when cold. But nothing I ever considered worthy of reporting during the warranty period. And after each service following on from them using the upper engine cleaner (Subaru engines seem to love this stuff) it is pretty good for a few weeks.

The most common problem in 04 GT's is faulty 02 sensors. Most of us have had this issue at least once. So if you are considering buying one and it is possible to get the 02 sensors checked (not sure if it is) then do so.

I've got a MY06 (05 Build) running the 2.0T, never had that problem at all.

Depending on how hard you look, your always going to find issues with any car.

There are fair few people that have had their 2.0T Libs for many years & are more then happy with them.

I've also owned a MY05 GT and a MY07 STi, and so far no idle issues.

Dude, if you're THAT fussy that this issue holds you back on buying a car, perhaps you shouldn't get a car at all. All manufacturers will have that 1 or 2 cars that have unfixable problem. Of all the cars I've owned, it may not have been an issue with idling but it was an issue with something else.

The fact that you read about a single problem and make it representative of the entre Liberty range may hamper you from buying anything else as well (ie. what model years? what engines? etc) as all the other companies will have single issues that plague various people. Good luck.

I had idle issues but a new set of injectors replaced under warranty fixed it.

I own MY05 GT and had the rough idle problem. Once the injectors were replaced, also under warranty the issue was resolved.

What exactly are the idle problems these Libertys supposedly have? Just cos I researched the car a lot before purchasing and never heard of it.

Apparently, according to many many other Liberty forums, engine idling problems so horrific that it can lead to kidney failure and/or sterility.

i want to know what this idle problem is to, ive got a my04GT with 115000klms and no issue,

when i start it in the morning when shes cold it revs a bit high and with it being an auto you really gotta put some force on the breaks when its in drive, and when something rolls under the passenger seat the airbag lights come on  but other than that no problemo

My car has always had a slight idle problem until now,it got bad and wanted to stall at lights. Took it to Subaru and they found it to be the driver side injectors....they said it will cost over $700 to get fixed, (wish they found it during the extended warranty period, every service I have complained about the rough idle and they couldn't find the problem and reset the computer)

DAMN JYNX ME!

so i now have an incredibly rough idle, as of today, drove the car to work- fine, then nipped out for lunch and the entire drive its been chugging when i stop like it wants to stall, do we think its injectors like others? should i run some injector cleaner through and see if that quick fixes it?

i do not want to spend $700 for new injectors.

also to add to this, i pulled over and checked the engine while it was idling, i got that smell like burnt off eggs (as i discribe it) as if i had dropped some coolant somewhere, the overflow bottles cap appeared to have popped off but water levels still seemed fine and no sign of running hot..
