Sorry Owen,

I am currently not quite Project Veloci at this moment. More Like Project Constrictio...

In any case, what have you done to yours since our last blast?

If we do, then it will have to be at a drive day. And as mine is a daily drive, not going to a track.

To one and all, I have had a couple of PM and emails that start to build a picture of potential errors. On my part that could be related to the exhaust issue. It may not be the size, but the internal orientation of some perforated section that are offset that could be generating turbulence inside the exhaust flow. Not sure how I am going to capture this, but a GoPro mounted on the rear may help. Alternatively, another dyno session to put some new mufflers on the rear to see if the turbulence can be reduced.

Pretty sure there is also an offset perforated section in the centre 3-inch muffler, so again, I might have to do some re-work on the exhaust to straighten up as many sections as possible to test the impacts on flow.

Anyway, those with far superior knowledge of fluid dynamics may be able to make some better observations than I.

Apparently, size does not matter!

I haven't made any improvements since last time. I have Shockwork coilovers going in to improve the ride soon and that's about it. The Golf is my wife's daily driver, hasn't seen a track day ever :)

Well, it was pretty even last time, so would be interesting to see if my perception of improvements matches reality. Time and place will be the tricky bit. And I will need to run a liquid laxative through mine before we do!

Drop the back section of exhaust and go for a drive see if you can feel extra power?

Recently, I replaced the Pedders XA coilovers with the stock suspension and added some new Bilstein shocks. More family friendly ride now!!!

Next item of work will be the exhaust to get a sound level and note that I can live with (and for the neighbours too on early morning starts).

Did some calibrated ear assessments while the car was up on the hoist at Ivan's new workshop. Test range of engine rpm (unloaded) was from idle to 4,000 rpm. Two of us with calibrated ear drums identified all the noise (raspiness) was emanating from the headers. A quick consultation/solutioneering session and we decided to do a wrap of each primary collector on the headers. Like so:

Image

After completion of the primary wrap, we took the car for a spin and that single wrap reduced the majority of the raspiness, say 90%. So we consulted and solutioned some more and decided to do a secondary wrap over the top of the primaries and extending all the way to the flange joint. Like so:

Image

Driving home was bliss with no more raspiness audible to my calibrated ear drum, and at the time, the wrap material (titanium) was still damp. The real test was once the wrap had dried and hardened which I tested out this morning. And guess what, I can still hear a little of the raspiness on start up. I imagine it will also be there under load and will find out shortly.

It is my opinion at this point, that the gauge of the metal used to make the headers is too narrow to achieve anywhere near what I want (and dont want) to hear from the engine bay. So, further investigation will be ongoing for the next month or more until I make a decision.

Sounds like you might be heading down the custom headers path...

If so, go speak to Barney at Hallam performance. I've seen some of the headers he's made on show cars and they look awesome.

If going or using stainless steel? also consider the type of stainless...and not just the thickness...

301, 304, 310 etc.
