calibrating 2nd hand dash clusters immobiliser

Hey All

I sourced a 2nd hand dash cluster some time ago and since have had the odometer kms wound forward to match actual engine kms

My actual issue is when I recently installed the cluster the car wouldnt start
I believe The immobiliser not being calibrated to my car is the issue and am wondering if there is any way this can be done without going to the stealership?

Ill have to get my charm on and try to be nice. I used to use beer trade for everything until I moved here to Katherine so expensive if a carton of anything is 50 bucks buy it bout the cheapest you'll get haha

Any Reputable auto locksmith should be able to come to your home and do this.

Just don't spare the details in telling them what you have or haven't done. Their time is your money.

Hmmm hadnt thought of that. Not sure how many there would be here but I'll ask around might save me a trip to Darwin

I've heard of a couple of others around that could do what was needed, but i had to utilise the dealer to do it for me.

The cluster needs to talk to the ecu and to the BIU. If you have a spare key, be sure to bring it with you, just in case.

Its just a pain driving 350km one way to get this done but these are the prices we pay sometimes I suppose I been meaning to call subaru this week to get a quote but been flat stick at work

Daniel, do you have a dealer in Katherine? it may be the cheeper option, if not give Danny a call @ http://www.topendlocksmiths.com.au/automotive.html he may get work down your way .

Brainy, you need to check if the lockey you call can do this type of work, not all can, some can only clone existing keys. The top guys have heaps of expensive gear to be able to do vehicles, not only Subaru. Most guys can do up to 2011-12. The new "G" stamped keys have the 80bit encryption system and need specialist programmers. Some guys are are even doing EEPROM work on vehicles to write the keys directly into the ECU/BIU

The cluster is part of the immobilizer system, so you need to re-program both keys to the vehicle.

The dealer will need the security code as well, so If you have it (small alloy tag) take it with you. If you don't have the alloy tag, get the dealer to get it from Subaru Aust prior to you getting there, even though it only takes 20 minutes for them to get it, it's 20 minutes less you have to wait..

I've only ever heard of Locksmith's cloning keys, but since you have 2 working keys (???) prior to swapping the cluster, not sure they can do anymore to assist???

You need to search pretty intensely for them though

Thanks for the advice gents. Looks like subaru is the way to go. Ill have a look for security code. I have 2 keys both working hopefully they dont bend me over too far ill try and call them tomorrow and hopefully book it in for next week sometime. Will keep you posted

The small alloy tag you mention is for the key code (cuts on the key) he won't need that for programming. If you have a working key an auto locksmith won't need that tag. He can decode your key by eye or with vernier calipers or use his X,Y,Z Axis key machine to decode it. Worth doing as you get a key cut back to factory specs, not a worn copy.

If all keys are lost and the code isn't recorded in your books. Removing a drivers door lock or using special lock decoders will give him a code to make a working key.


NB: Most dealers don't cut their keys, they out source them to Locksmiths like us.

Words of advise (if you want).

We see 3-5 people a week who have failed to get another working key for their vehicle. They either buy a vehicle with one key or loose one. When they find's out a RKE (Remote key) will set them back $400-500 they make this dumb decision they won't get a spare. Then when they loose the last one or have keys stolen they are looking around $1100 to have keys replaced and locks recoded.
You don't have to have a remote key as a spare (unless you have an factory alarm or key pad like the Imprezza's)
An auto lockey can make you a after market working transponder key for around $150-200 (if you go to them) programmed into your vehicle. Ok you will have to unlock the vehicle the hard way but it will start your vehicle and you will still be mobile.

When delivered (New)..... There are 2 alloy tags on the keyring, one has the key cut code, while the other has the "Security ID" number on it.

This is the tag I was referring too.

I rang subaru today and they quoted me 150 to do it

I may have found a bloke locally though so will see him tomorrow and see what he reckons
