I expect the same compliments, if I come over Bruce!

May be a little biased, but looks nice :) Good size, good fit, the std nuts sit very cleanly too.

With a JDM grille, it would look very sporty indeed

Yeah I've seen 17s on Submeisters lib and thought they looked really good. I think they were a cruisn purchase as well.

Come over when next in the area.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering a replacement grill... :)

Not a major mod, but I removed this today (no, not the chair):

Image

Took the car for a spin afterwards, it's a little throatier (particularly under load, and the BOV "woosh" is more apparent (given I have a full plumb-back).

I was going to consider building myself a an intake on the bottom of the stock box to replace it. But having removed the fog-light surround, I'm unsure as to how much air actually flows into the section under the stock airbox, I'll have to have a bit of a play to see what I can find or maybe modify to increase airflow in there. Worst case, I just seal the bottom of it up and leave it to suck air in over top of the radiator as per the stock setup.

Any work through on how you did it rob? Also is it bad for engine to remove this and need a retune ?
Pros of doing this is ?

Wow. Newbie. Just. Wow.

Looks good Rob. You might have to drill the foglight surround if you want more air, but I doubt anyone has noticed a performance difference?

Remove MAF intake hose from the airbox.
Unclip airbox, remove lid.
Remove over-the-radiator intake path.
10mm socket to remove the bolt holding the airbox to the chassis (next to engine), also one inside the airbox that holds it to the front (near the headlight).
Pull entire airbox out of car.
Undo the clip holding the "milk bottle" to the bottom of the airbox.
Twist "milk bottle" and pull out of the bottom of the airbox.
Replace airbox and over-the-radiator intake (reverse earlier procedure).

Pros of doing it - slight noise change, potential new intake path for air into the airbox. All the milk-bottle does is provide additional volume for the airbox, it doesn't (stock) provide anywhere else for air to get in - what it may do is provide somewhere for water that's somehow ingested into the airbox to drain away (without adding the possibility of sucking more water into the airbox).

Could it be bad for the engine? Well, it provides a new path for water to enter the airbox if you happen to drive through a ~40cm deep puddle (basically, it'd have to be up to the headlights), you *could* end up with hydrolock (ingest water into the engine, pistons try to compress a liquid, bottom end goes bang). In theory, with the stock setup, you could drive into a very deep puddle briefly (that let water into the airbox over the radiator intake, but didn't stay under so long as to fill the airbox AND the "milk bottle") and would hold enough volume that it may prevent the engine from sucking in water. But you're talking about some extreme edge-cases here, and it's very unlikely IMHO that any of this is actually likely to happen.

I removed the foglight surround, and even with it missing entirely, I can't see an easy path for significant airflow into the area where the "milk bottle" resided. I'll investigate further at some stage.

I'd be very surprised if there's any performance benefit right now. If I do put a "snorkel" down into that area and can get some decent airflow in there, the car may be able to suck in a bit more cool air (as even over the radiator gets warm once the engine is up to temperature), and that may have an impact on performance. We'll see. :)

Yeah, but it's pretty expensive for a bit of pipe with a bellmouth on it. I'm pretty sure I could do just as well with some PVC piping, a connector or two and a bit of heat. :)

How do you mean? The area behind the foglight is the inside the wheel guard and it's an empty space all the way between the foggie and the intake box. You just need to figure out how to get the air past the fog light. Then run a pipe from the bottom of the intake box down closer to the fog light. If possible angle the pipe to catch incoming air passively  Can even attach a funnel onto the end for maximum GAINS :D

Senator had a similar set-up made by G88

HKS intake funnel is an attempt to do this, but IMO falls short (there's a good reason why they never really took off http://www.rhdjapan.com/hks-air-intake-funnel.html) and at the cost of $100 you could have a proper setup...

Oh, I know exactly where the area is. The issue is at present that it's loosely "sealed", so I'll have to do some modification. I just need to work out where that modification will be most effective. :)
