Flip Key Mod

Postby scottiemac » Fri Mar 21, 2014 11:44 am

Hey All,
So I decided to change my Gen 4 key to a flip key for no other reason than I think it looks cool.
I got the flip shell from here: http://www.wholesalecarkeys.net/modifie ... itter.html
I think 2 keys were $30 or something like that anyway.
Now you have to make sure you go to a key cutter that has a "wave cutter"
Some of them can cut via code and some of them need to "trace" your current key.
I could not find a locksmith to do it via code which is the recommended way so I used the spare key. ie the one that is least likely to have wear and it worked for me.

So the keys cots me $35 each to cut, then it was only a matter of swapping over the buttons and the chip.
Now the chip didn't fit nicely into the provided slot but I wrapped it in a little bit of sticky tape and then it was fine.

When removing the case on the flip key remember that there is a 3rd screw under the logo sticker.
Also that it will spin due to the spring. but it's really easy to put back together.

If anyone is trying it and is having trouble let me know.
So I know it's does nothing but look cool, it's still sort of cheap ($50 per key)
You can decide if it's worth it or not.
Different strokes for different folks.
Thanks, Scott

Top job I think this will get a lot of people swapping fobs definately a consideration

Could you keep us upto date with how the durability goes. Ive seen a lot of factory flip keys fall to pieces over the years so hopefully quality is good

Will do, but it feels like great quality plastic and really solid.
So hope it holds up.
Maybe if it does fail, I can always change back.
The Aluminium sticker is the only thing that is a little sub par.
But only if I was really picky.

had mine for probably 4+ months, a bunch of us did it at a similar time.
I've had no problem with mine.

If you like to have a flip-key, I'd recommend it.

Why is it essential to use a wave cutter when getting it cut?
