Disable Headlight Washers

Postby MYDZYR » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:45 pm

I discovered my driver's side headlight washer came off the other week so I went and purchased the replacement chrome cover. I assumed it would just fit back on, but it seems something else has broken off the mechanism which won't allow me to fix the cover as it has nothing to really secure to.

So I'm just wondering if there is a way to disable the headlight washers?

Yeah there is a fuse you can take out to stop them working.

Where did you purchase the replacement from and how much was it? One of mine has fallen off and I have the part # but not sure where to get them. Don't want to go through $ubaru because I think you can get them online for 1/4 of the price.

As for the thing you are missing, it's some sort of clip which you can also purchase, someone else on the forum had the same issue. If you search you might be able to find out. Or look at this diagram

Thanks Keiran, I initially found the part number on eBay here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Subaru-Liber ... 232ddbad6b

I ended up going to Makin and Luby down in Preston and got them to try and match the price listed in the eBay ad above. Just so happens the price in this eBay ad is ridiculously cheap and he couldn't match it. He did it for me for $88. I wanted it there and then so I just went ahead with it.

I think this eBay is worth checking out, just not sure if it is the driver's or passenger side.

Strange, looking at the diagram it would appear I need the part in position 6 but it doesn't have a part# listed against it in the detail listed below it.

Yeah I have my eye on that ebay link already, but the part number doesn't seem to match up on the box in the photo.

Did yours come in some sort of black wrapping like in the photo?

Also can anyone comment here where they did purchase it from, because some people claimed they were getting them for $25 but never posted from where.

Yeah I was a bit confused with that ebay ad too. Mine came in the same cardboard box and was just wrapped in bubble wrap by itself

Not sure where to get the clips from though. I think I read somewhere that people have been gluing them on, and then disabling them.

I had read that thread before but missed the link of partsouq.com. Looks like I can get it for half of what Subaru charges. $44.60

Which fuse do you pull to disable them?

I had a bit of a mess around today and couldn't figure out which fuse it was. Pulled about 6 of them and none were related to the headlight washers. Owners manual doesn't even list a fuse for the washers.

Anyone able to post which fuse it is?

Yeah I've had a look too...I'm not sure if it can be done.

I just make sure I turn my headlights off before I wash the windscreen

Oh that's a bummer! I don't know what to do now, my car looks pretty silly at the moment with one missing washer cover :(

I came across this while searching the forums. viewtopic.php?f=45&t=15300&start=45#p249249

Drill 2 holes in the underside of the cover
Image

Seems to be the best fix I can see so far. Ensures that they will not come off.
I just put my new one on (missing this black clip) Image
And so I am using blutack inside as a holder instead. Plus the 2 zip ties.

As I was testing the new fix and using the headlight washers a few times, the RIGHT hand side cover fell off my car
So I have also drilled 2 holes in the underside of the cover and zip tied that one too (that side still has the black plastic cap)

Seeing how easily the other side came off my car, I suggest at least anyone who has taken their headlights off the car to do the fix before you lose it ($50 and 2 weeks postage for replacement) in case it's been loosened. And I think everyone should do it anyway because it takes 5 mins per side.

good find kieran

and this is a good tip that mick suggested cos i find that the water that sprays on the lights just end up splashing on the bonnet and making dirty marks.

Where is this secondary washer bottle relay exactly?
