You're exactly right, except we're talking about a vf46 vs 52, not a td04 vs td05. I've raced a vf52 lib on the 46, and if I was to describe it - it looked like I kept up, but at close inspection he probably won by a metre. That was to 90km. And no our cars were not identical twins, so yes it could have been down to anything. But to say the vf52 is slower to a 100...nah :) I imagine he had a decent tune too considering I was kido tuned at the time and still got beat ;)

I think it also depends how much time the tuner spends in the mid range and low if they work on this area and less on the top end peak power looking for that peak number for the client

That much of a difference at the beginning makes me thing the two dyno pulls were started at different rpms though...

That is in higher gears though where more load is possible.

20psi in 1st gear on a VF46 with E85 at 3200rpm got it off the line like a rocket. 18psi on E85 with VF52 on same car got same torque but not til 4000rpm and it felt lazier. Would that be enough to shave a half second off the 100kph sprint?

Hi guys!

New to the forum, just bought an 07' GT-B STi wagon, its already got some serious mods;
AVO Turbo 400
AVO Dump pipe as well as up pipe
MRT TMIC
Cold air intake
Exhaust has been done as well as the headers.
ECU tune

I know the car is running 17.5psi and pumping 230ATWKW but i want to go BIG with this...how much boost can the internals i.e. pistons, rods handle?

I want to run 25psi just to take the car to the Sydney drags...should be able to run under 12 with that boost :D

Ill get some proffesional advice but i thought this would be a good place to start :)

Do a search for 2.5 Headgasket here

Might want to save that cash for "going big" and instead keep it on hand for if/when your heads lift.

You're more or less at the limit right now.
Before going bigger my advice would be to get a good tune ASAP.
From Matt, Coyote or via Garage 88.

From there it depends on your budget and desired power level and intended use.
Keep in mind you'll still get better value tuning an RB or 2JZ.

Best value ever will be preserving an enjoying what you have right now, since it's a great street setup and the investment is done, but please let us know your budget and intentions as it's a fun question to answer.

(The answer is long rod destroked, cold weld billet insert closed deck block with a short runner twin scroll, twin wastegate, low mount v band turbo to vertical flow V mount fmic 2.5i reverse mount ported mani to 2L big port heads and all the required supporting mods eg fueling, drivetrain etc for 35+ psi & 400 over)

Good to see someone finally bought that black wagon!
Nice car, cant believe it sat on the market for so long!

That AVO 400L has more in it, up to 25psi iirc.
They top out around 260atw and you could get there with e85 and ID1000 injectors etc.
But your pistons and bearings etc won't take it if there's any detonation at all.
It just depends how close to the edge you want to be.
I'd suggest a conservative tune with what you have for many years of enjoyment. :)

welcome :)

As said above.....engine is probably at its limit in regards to safety and reliability....even with the mods in place atm...

Sure you can push it to 250-280kw atw on pump....but it sure wont last ..

Subaru engines require nurturing and allot of TLC....love your engine...and it will love you back...abuse it and push it...and it will abuse you and push out engine bits

I would start off with getting a re tune and seeing how good / safe / reliable the existing tune is? and take it from there.....enjoy the car as is.....unless you plan to unleash $$$$$ at it......like some of us have

Thanks for the info guys!

I suspected as much,

I think I can safely push it to 250ATWKW without too much more engine wear.

Im just guessing here but that will probably be on 20-22psi boost?, did i mention this is a work car? haha

my budget is endless depending on how I feel I suppose but if I do decide to go down that route ill put it on a dyno...be interesting to see what it pushes out.

Cheers again for the advice!

From what i understand, the heads can lift on these engines at around 20-21psi. So if youre looking to go past that youd need to upgrade the head studs. Not that easy on a boxer engine as you have to take the motor out. So if you were to go down that route, it would be worth looking into doing the head gasket and some internals if you wanted bigger power.

If the car is tuned by MRT, they would have used a hub dyno, so that 230kw might in reality only be 210-220wkw. But asside from that, id probably get the tune re-visited by someone better than MRT. You may get more power, but may just get a better more reliable tune.

its not boost that lifts the heads but the cylinder pressure so this is more ignition timing issue.

if your car is been worked on by mrt you might want to rethink this.... imo

getting under 12 I think is going to be more that 250 atm tbh im thinking around 300awkw

Gotya.. thanks for the tip!
Everyone gave me sh*t when MSR tuned mine at 19psi.. good to know.. now i just have to hope that someone as reputable as MSR is aware of the cylinder pressure youre talking about!

It's not wear, it's detonation that will kill your bearings, rods and or head gasket.
As you push for more power the headroom or margin for error aka operating out of the safe envelope, decreases.
So it may take just a little malfunction related to fuel, boost or mechanical items to blow the engine...

I've got a 400L waiting to be installed.
They make 250ish atw at 25psi ish. Max.
Thats starting to approach its limit and is sort of beyond its USP...
Which is to be the fastest spooling totally bolt on street turbo with a reputedly awesome mid range.'
This means it has stock like spool but with a big hit of power where it might be fading with a VF46.

So for fun you could run the car at 25psi assuming you have the injectors to suit.
But lower boost would be safer long term.

Right! I think I've got my head around it.

From what he told me the head gaskets have already been upgraded as well as the fuel injectors and fuel pump so the only real items of concern are the internals like rods and bearings if i were to increase boost and hence increase cylinder pressure.

And I think you're right "GB", under 12 is optimistic with 250ATWKW, however this car did have a re-tune after a visit to MRT by Mercury and from what I hear they're loads better.

Apparently they also mentioned to the seller that this car in the current setup would run high 12's. Thats why i was keen to try it out. :D

I'll definitely get a re-tune happening although the car is running very sweet ATM. You mentioned: Matt, Coyote or via Garage 88 think i might send one of them a PM.

Like i said budget can be accompanied for what needs to be done if forged pistons, stronger bearings etc.. prove to cost in excess of $5-6K then ill probably just leave it, but I really want to make sure the engine can handle higher boost with a good safety margin.
