Heya - about time I introduced myself !

Postby dwayne » Thu Jul 17, 2008 12:21 am

Hey all !

Thought I'd better introduce myself - been lurking anonymously for a while, joined a couple weeks ago.

My names Dwayne, I live in Perth, travel a few times a year to Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne for work. I'm in IT Management, and have a team across those locations.

Born '74, have had 5 Suby's, about to go to number 6. I've come from a family of older vehicle enthusiasts, mainly Valiants, brother has had heaps of chargers etc. including genuine E49's, so I've had cars from all end of the spectrum including lowly Uni student got no money cars :)

Previous rides in order (I think):

1973 Mazda 323
1963 S Series Valiant, fully restored Pushbutton auto (family had 4 !!)
19whocares Holden Gemini (don't ever do that to your kids ugh)
1971 Valiant Drifter Panel Van 5.1 litre v8 (beast ! would chirp into 3rd !)
1993 Suzuki Vitara
1971 Falcon XW GTHO (genuine, really wish I kept it - big $$$ now)

92 Liberty RS Gunmetal Grey (wrote it off  - for which I must apologise )

MY99 Forester GT Luxury White Manual (great fun, but wife complained suspension was too soft after RS)

99 Pajero Exceed (kiddy bus)

MY98 WRX Royal Silver

99 Verada

MY05 Liberty Black 3.0R Spec B Wagon 6sp Man (Friday arvo car  )

MY06 WRX STi WRC Blue (wife's car, then gave it to me when we bought Kluger)

Just two months ago bought new Kluger Grande, Black (traded Spec B in on it), wifes new car

Now that I've inherited the WRX STi, it's not really my favourite car as a daily driver, so it's being traded, I'm waiting on delivery of my new ride - the last MY07 GT Spec B tuned by STi still in Subaru hands (so I'm told) - and it's precisely what I wanted, Manual Sedan Obsidian Black with charcoal rims ! I was just about to settle on an auto, but someone in Subaru Australia has decided to upgrade I guess, dealer found it for me, so picking it up with 10,000 K's on the clock. Currently making it's way across the nullarbor to Perth from Subaru HQ, so will be taking delivery around the 28th or so. Very excited !! Wife doesn't know yet, has no idea. Still she can go be happy in her Kluger :P

Will post pics when I get it, of course. Don't even know the number/300 yet.

Just a word about my RB wagon - what a nightmare that car was ! It was the first Suby I bought brand new (others were demo or 2nd hand), and I loved it to bits, but after a replacement short motor, complete fifth and sixth gear rebuild (car was off the road for over 10 weeks last year - sucks on a novated lease !), and about to have a second short motor, I told Subaru not to worry, and went and traded it on the Kluger, after informing them they lost a Tribeca sale because of it.

It was one of the early 3 litres that consumed too much oil with the manuals - way too much, around 700 - 800 mls/1000k's in some cases. short motor got replaced at 50,000 K's (after numerous oil consumptions tests since about 25000 K's).

Sixth gear in the gearbox started playing up (before motor got replaced), but finally the sixth gear was so noisy to shift into and was jamming sometimes, so that got fixed at 55,000 K's - and took 7 and a half weeks !!!! The story was that they needed some special alignment kit to rebuild it (first 6 sp rebuild in Oz I believe), Suby WA or the dealer bought a unit for $10K, wasn't accurate enough for the 6 speed, so apparently Suby Oz had to send over a unit from Melbourne or Sydney that was valued at $40K to realign the gears or whatever it needed to do.

Then continuing oil consumption problems saw Subaru hedging about another engine, got sick of it, took it in on the day I traded it and they finally confirmed they were going to replace the engine (after weeks of testing and complaining), but it was not to be as the car was going elsewhere. I still haven't seen it turn up on carsales or carpoint, not sure what happened to it in the end. Despite all of the problems, I absolutely LOVED that car. Good dose of power sweet 6 speed, mated very well with bilsteins. The reason I got it instead of the GT at the time was simply the 18's, the 6 speed, and the bilsteins. 18 months later along came the GT spec B, but oh well, you get that.

Anyway, after all the problems with the 3 litre, swore that the next Suby would not be based on the 3 litre (hence Kluger instead of Tribeca 3.6). Was tossing up to get a GT Spec B, but really wanted a tuned by STi if I could - so I'm glad I've managed to find exactly what I was after.

Only cosmetic mods planned. The RS had zorst, chip, intake. WRX had zorst. Fozzy GT, Spec B and WRX STi were all completely stock. Looking at maybe a Corazon grill, some eyelids, and currently chasing Phat for one of the HKS filters.

'nuf rambling :-)

Anyways, enough ramblings, great to be here

I agree with Adam! Very informative!! But not a bad thing.

Welcome aboard! Glad to see you didnt loose hope in Subarus, even after all that heartache.

Your wife must be very happy with the grande! I love them! They still sell heaps at work. Definitely the SUV i would want!

LOL! Funny how newbies jump on saying either "I wont mod" or "Little mods"...... with us on here & the PHATSO, good luck!

Welcome dwayne! I hope your stay at the forum is informative for you. As the last post mentioned, I'm not sure if you'll be able to stick with the 'very little mods', especially since you've modified your previous rides.

It's very hard for someone who has modified their previouis cars to not modify their current one.

Welcome aboard Dwayne. Excellent introduction as well. Great choice of car and colour but then again you I have the same car since June 07 and still very happy. Hope to see you rolling in Perth. Recommend the HKS filter and resonator removal as first mods.
cheers Dave

Dwayne,
Geat to see you onboard mate! Shame you had so many dramas with the 3RB. I've had nothing of the same. Can't speak for the engine oil consumption but knowing how you used to drive the Fozzy GT... I reckon I know why you had trouble with 5th and 6th gears in the 3RB! :P

Must come over and take a look at that STi after the missus has cooled down! :D

Cheers,
