Petrol Consumption + Wierd High Revs.

Postby invigrr8 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:00 pm

Heya!

Just wondering what petrol consumption you guys are getting on your 2.5i's. I think mine's unusually high for my car but a call to Subaru have said that its normal for the car to be drinking a bit more since its only done less then 5000kms.

Also my car, esp. when cold, when it idles or when I clutch in, the revs jump up to 3000rpm where it stays for 30 seconds and drops back down to idle. Bearing in mind I am not applying anything to the accellerator, for the revs to just jump up to 3k on its own when I just cluth. Subaru have told me its normal as well which I find unusual. Anyone else getting the same issue?

Anyways here;s my fuel readings.
Comsumption: 12.1L/100Km
Petrol: Unleaded
Transmission: Manual
All driving done from home to city for work (30Ks)

Is that motorway, or stop/start. That makes a huge difference.

Hi Rick,

Its not a motorway. Mainly start/stop at the ease of peak hour (9am and 6:30pm) on the Hume Highway, Sydney from Chullora to City Road, Chippendale. One of the customers who travels a similar route does only 9.8L/100km with the same spec as mine. I also change gears at about 2500-3000rpm if that helps.

Cheers

Motorway tends to be very consistent, stop/start depends a lot on driving style.
The 3000rpm business does sound very strange though. :?

Hey mate,

I have a manual 2.5i and its the same for me. But I belive it only does that while the engine is cold. Once your engine is sufficiently warmed up the surge in revs when you clutch/turn the wheel will drop back to normal.

I don't think its an actual fault with the car, i just think, like most other cars, that at idle or slow manouvering when it's cold, the car will hold the revs a little higher to try warm itself up.

And 12.1L/100km sounds a little high.. Not by much tho.. So far since I've got my car (8000km) I've averaged 10.8L, but bare in mind I don't drive during peak hour often, and when I do.. It's in the low 11's..

I'm a really stingy bastard when it comes to petrol sometimes, so I'll shift as early as possible, usually between 2000-2500rpm.. but when im super cheap its 2000-2100rpm max.. Altho i heard this can actually drink more petrol which logically thinking about it, may be true.

That's my input.

mine sits a around that too... but thats mine running the way it is at the moment.

of course your going to use more in peak hour situations, but how does it perform in highway situations? still got a high consumption???

mine warms up at about 1600rpm

that's with 9C ambient, water temp at 16C and car being left garaged overnight.

3K is really high IMO. even when mine was new, it never got THAT high.

as for drinking...

used to get about 400KMS to a tank when i was working in the city and was driving with peak traffice daily.

High revving

Postby Loki666 » Thu Aug 28, 2008 8:46 pm

Hi there. My car is about 1 month old with about 1500km on the clock. Mine also jumps to about 3000rpm when cold and reversing from the garage. It stays at that for about 5 seconds then goes back to about 1200rpm. I spoke to the local dealer today about it and they said they had never heard of it before and want me to leave the car overnight so they can check it out.

I've got the MY05 (last of them before the '06 came out) 2.5i 5MT. cold it'll sit about 1200-1500 rpm but I can tap the accelerator and it will sink back to the normal ~800rpm idle.

consumption-wise cruising I can get about 7.2l/100km, combined fwy/stop-start about 9-ish (~550-600km's), atm about 10-11 (450-530km's) as it's moreso stop-start.

oh.. and that's on standard. I'll put premium in it for long runs. trip to Canberra I got about ~760km's off ~55L. had the trip computer estimating 900+ at one stage.

My MY07 Wagon has done around 5,000 km since I bought it 2nd hand (now at around 35,000 km)...

Best I've seen is 9.67 l/100
Worst I've seen is 11.66 l/100
Average I'm getting is 10.70 l/100

Total fuel consumption over 5,394 km is 624.41 litres

I also track fuel type, and have observed the following:

Caltex Unleaded - 10.45 l/100
Caltex Vortex Gold - 11.04 l/100
Caltex Vortex 98 - 9.67 l/100
Shell E10 - 10.72 l/100

I always try to run my tank down until the light comes on, with an average fill of 44.60 litres

as for the high revs, my car hits about 1700 RPM when cold, but blipping the throttle brings idle back to the normal 800 RPM idle...

Cheers,

Andrew

Yeh my ''09 2.5 wagon will also rev right up on cold startup if u put it in gear and pull the clutch up within the first say 1min of starting, 1 of the other guys at work has a 2.5t manual and it does the same thing.

As for fuel use i do heaps of Km for work mon-fri both city (peak) and highway + reg run through the hills on w/e's (car just turned 6months old today and has just under 22,000km) and also carry around 250kg in the boot full time + ladder on the roof (removed for hill runs! lol), boys that go on the reg cruise days in melb can confirm the boot is kahos

My fuel use sits around 8.4 - 8.8l reg sh1fting around 3000-3500rpm getting close if not more than 600+km to a tank. also running only BP 91.
I dont know if it helps but i have also removed and sealed off the factory air resi that sits under the air box (big white/clear jug look alike!)

just as an fyi, ~1500km's melb to bris, avg'd about 7.8L/100km. didn't seem to make much diff whether ulp or pulp or 1/2 1/2.

second half of the trip was on pulp with a/c on, so that's prolly where it avg'd out.
