Has anyone investigated variable vane turbos?
They come standard on the the newer Porsche 911 turbos and are chosen for very early spool and great power through to redline.
There are a few companies that make them but not many tuners out there have tried them out.
I would be really interested to see a 400hp turbo on a liberty that hits max boost at 1800 rpm and pulls hard to 7000rpm.

Do not need variable vane... new factory Subaru turbo has a brushless motor as a bearing cartridge. 22psi at off idle is possible

I have been getting 120kw at 2800rpm on the VF46 Autos. VF52 needs 3200+rpm to get singing

Would be very interested to see this new electric boosted turbo.
It would be a game changer if they could be adapted to older cars.
No lag would be awesome and you could then run much bigger turbos.
At least the variable vane turbos can be fitted to our cars now!

Yes, noticed a fair bit of lag but the mid range and top end is heaps better.

Hi Matt,

I'm away until the end of next week, but when I get back I'll dig out some logs to refute that statement.

You done many turbo BR86s? Every canned tune we've seen with a kit so far has been terrible, so there's massive potential ... even if it's just saving an engine.

Hey Matt
I can't find any details about Subaru's proposed electric turbo.
All the websites talk about it being a rumour that Subaru are still working on it.
Have you got a link that goes into details?

Here is a link with some guys putting Holset turbos into a WRX

Yeah, horrendous ones out. The AF#1 Learning in D range is popping a LOT of motors. D Range Max is 60 so 60.1 = winner ;) 30 odd boosted ones I have done are just popping gearboxes. Got a mate using my CNC at end of month to make an adaptor to fit a stronger Aisin gearbox

Now that would be a new dimension altogether. I've seen electric superchargers under development running off 48v dc that can spool up in milliseconds but they are limited by max air flow. The test configuration I saw was 1 electric supercharger to supply 1.5bar up to 3000 rpm to allow the turbo to spool up. That was a Garrett turbo on a 1600cc 4 cyl ford engine from memory.. It was extremely effective but the control systems & tuning it took a lot of hours to develop.

If the benefits of both Can be combined into 1 unit & retrofitted to existing installations the market would be huge..

Any links Matt?

Just out of curiosity..Does anyone know how much power is needed to supply high flow and pressure with an ELECTRIC artificial atmospherer?
