Flip Keys

Anyone done a Flip key conversion for a 2009' 4gen liberty standard key? the dealer quoted $450 ... so hence i'm looking at the aftermarket and DIY options which involve deconstructing the standard triangle key (the one with lock, unlock and boot button) ... pulling the transponder out, and either cutting and fitting the key into the new flip casing, or getting a key blank laser cut.

If you scroll down that page you've linked, the non-laser claims to fit 05-09 legacy (liberty).

I have one of these now http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331041114423, just to try it out.
Upside - easy to move the remote stuff.
Downside - the security chip is loose in the hole, and needs to be jammed in with something , or glued to stop it rattling.
- when winding the tension back onto the spring (that flicks the key out) after inserting remote stuff and chip, its easy to bend the spring and stuff it!
- Mr Minit charges $36 to copy your old key's profile - worked fine. Makes total cost just on $50.

Seems Mr minit shops can detect a security chip inside a key, and maybe even copy a chip's data ...

I got one of these today too. Seems like reasonable quality, but a lot of the cheap Chinese stuff appears that way when it arrives, time will tell on this one.

So my spare key had been sitting in a draw for a couple of years and the battery was flat. I went to the key cutting place at the mall, the dude behind the counter obviously was lined me up to rip me off with the new key cutting. He took a long hard look at the key, groaned and said yeah I can do it, as if it's the first time he had ever seen a key that wasn't a lockwood. "Mate that'll be $49.50" WTF!! Seems a bit exy, but being that there are no other close key cutters and I was feeling impatient, I begrudging accepted and then he said another $25 for replacement battery! (Felt like I'd walked into Subaru!) Passed on the battery and walked over to Dick Smith for a $9.00 battery. Anyway, key was cut perfectly. I proceeded to install the guts of the spare key and new battery in the new flip key. Perfect, doors actuated, boot actuated and key turned but wouldn't start! Took me about 10 minutes to work out that the little piece of "plastic" that fell out of the old key was important Slotted that in (with a little tape wrapped around to make it snug) and it all works sweet.

Don't know why I wrote all of that junk above, to cut a long story short, I'm happy with the key, seems good, but time will tell of it's durability.

Mine arrived today. Feels pretty cheap and nasty, but looks OK. might sand some of the square edges down a bit.

Hopefully don't get charged heaps for the cutting.

I got my key cut from a locksmith in Clayton for $23 using the key code and battery from a masters store for $6 so you can save some coin depending on where you go.

I did try the mister minit at the shopping centres and all were quoting $40+.

Wow what a difference, $23 bargain, well probably all it should be Mind you the guys at my local shopping centre would be trying to cover their outrageous rents, according to the shop owners I have spoken too..

I'm stoked with the key, it is working fine and seems to be relatively durable, I found my 3 year old daughter facisnated by the flicking key, so she had them in her room for half an hour. That is the ultimate durability test!
