New Car Trouble :(

Hey guys I'm from Melbourne and this is my first post on the forum.

I just privately bought a Liberty 3.0 r-b 2005 with 100,700k's the seller got the road worthy and it had just had it been serviced at the dealer.

Yesterday I was driving it around and it was driving like a dream. Then all of a sudden it felt as though the power of the car cut in half, the engine light turned on and the cruise light began flashing. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil and sure enough there was none on the dipstick. I walked to a servo and then topped it up with the correct oil and now the engine is making a clunking noise.

I read through the road worthy report and noticed that the oil pump and rocker cover gasket had to be replaced in order to be road worthy and was wondering if this would require oil to be drained?

Any advice in regards to what the issue might be (my uncle who was a mechanic thought that it may be the lifters) and if I have any legal ground to stand on?

Find the mechanic who did the oil pump replacement.
yes, oil would need to be drained.

What is the timeframe between the service and the issue?

Have you identified the cel? (My guess: VVT related due to no oil pressure)

Have you checked the inner of the lower engine cover for oil or checked for leaks from the sump plug?

speaking out loud: did you / have you been checking oil and coolant levels? basic maint checks? If I just bought a 2nd hand car I would be vigelant in checking it since purchase just to make sure things like this can be avoided

holy crap that doesn't sound good....indeed...sounds like end bearings to me....especially if its been caused by oil starvation...not a cheap fix...I would go down the path of a reco engine ...instead of fixing this one..

I'm hoping you can go back and get it sorted.....but its going to be a tough one...

You do have a case for a claim with the dealer.

The oil pump replacement may have caused your problems, I would get an independant motor engineer to inspect the car and create a report on what they think caused the lack of oil. If they find it was caused by any work the dealer has done you have a claim with them no matter who payed or organized the work. Service warranties apply to all MTA dealers work, you need to go down this path.

It will take a while as they will not be too helpful but keep at it as repairs to these engines can cost big dollars.

I can't determine how long you had the vehicle but checking the oil level on ANY newly purchased 2nd hand car should be priority - just sayin

I had the car for about 3 hrs and the problem developed.
Thanks for all the advice guys, it's good to know there's a good community of people on here.
I have good news I went back to the mechanic with the seller of the car and the seller argued furiously on my behalf and the mechanics are going to fix it for free

this is what bottom end noise sounds like

you should really be asking why the oil pump was replaced.... oil pumps normally last the life of the engine... maybe there was low oil pressure issues... that's bad
