So I finally have a video! Its not great but you can just hear the noise.

Ignore the sound of rain, also will probably need to turn up the volume a fair bit .
Ignore the weird lag at the end of the video too, I blame Windows movie maker.

Really hope it is not a big end or anything as I just got the car .

Had a friend rev it while the car was stationary with my head under the bonnet.
The noise is barely audible but if I had to guess i'd say it was coming from the bell housing...

Some of you may have seen my other post about a 'metallic dust' coming from the bell housing
vent. Maybe the two are related? Clutch rattling on the input shaft or something? Or i'm just in
denial about it being a bearing

Also there is no metal in the gear/front diff oil or engine oil.....

On my way home today I decided to experiment a little and found that stationary in neutral
with the clutch engaged (peddle up) the noise Is audible, but with the clutch disengaged
(peddle pushed in) the noise goes away.... Car is at same rpm on both tests (2500Rpm).

Do these cars have a dual mass flywheel?

Do you think It could be flywheel chatter?
It sounds different to any flywheel chatter I've heard but the symptoms are the same,
Clutch in and it stops happening...
Maybe the previous owner put a lighter flywheel in?

Got a new clutch put in today.
Throw out bearing was definitely making a lot of racket.
Only problem is, now I can hear this noise even better!
Mechanic at the clutch place had no idea what it was,
but was pretty sure it wasn't a bearing!

As suggested earlier I will pursue the timing chain
tensioner path. I have noticed when I accelerate
aggressively i get the "mountain bike gear change"
noise for a second.

Worst part is, it is really hard for me to get it to make
the noise while stationary. So its really hard to find the
exact location on the noise.

Anyone else purchased a tensioner and timing cover
gasket recently? If so where did you get it and how
much did it cost?

Would it be best to do both tensioners at once while
the timing cover is off? Or is the passenger side one
the only one prone to failure?

Sorry for all the questions! This noise is driving me
crazy.

From memory the new tensioner was $150 straight from Subaru. Labour was a lot because they need to remove the radiator in order to get to the front cover, and then they need to seal it all back up.

All up was $800 for me for the one side. (passenger)

doesn't look too hard, remove belt, alternator, crank pulley and
radiator fans. Power steering pump and air con put to the side.
Then a million bolts later it looks like the cover would have enough
space to come out.

Though I could be wrong and probably am.

Also just to clarify, this noise does not occur till the engine is at
fully operating temperature. Was this the case for anyone else with
the tensioner issue?

If you re-install the chain incorrectly your motor will go ka-boom haha

It should be mentioned that the $800 included oil change and filter, flushing and replacing the coolant too. i think that was all

Ah, nice. That's not so bad, might take it down to $700-650ish.

Just an OEM Exedy clutch. Are there better options?

Dropped the oil today (5w30) and put in some 10w40 to see
if it would make a difference to the sound but it didn't
