Overfilled my front diff, is it a problem?

Postby Surge » Wed Oct 09, 2013 8:18 pm

Last week I changed the fluid in my rear diff, that went fine except it was a struggle to fill at such an odd angle.

Today I tried to change the front diff fluid in my 2.5i with the 4EAT.

I couldn't find a torx t70 anywhere so I bought a T60 which seemed to have enough grip.

The first problem was that when I was putting force on the drain plug, it suddenly cracked loose.
It flew all the way out and I didn't have a chance to put my oil pan under it.
I got covered in the fluid. Then I wasted a lot of daylight trying to clean up the mess I had made.

By the time I was done with the cleanup, it was almost dark. This made me rush the filling process.

So I managed somehow to overfill the front diff.
The fluid level is a good way past the Full mark. In fact it's up to the point on the dip stick where the stick isn't flat anymore.

Now the question I have is, what's the harm in having the diff this full?

solution that comes to mind is get a big syringe and get some vacuum hose, suck out the excess, or get a t70 torx bit and drain and fill properly

eBay has t70 torx bits

Tuspeed has company23 t70 in stock.

I've siphoned oil using thin clear PVC tubing that fits the dipstick hole ;)
