Not an audio expert but this is the way I did it - the advice came from Frankies Audio in Albion Park.

I utilised the speaker wires which were for the old 8" inbuilt sub. Chopped those and installed a Vibe hi to low line level converter. (not exactly sure why it was necessary since my amp has a hi level input but they threw it in for free lol). That sorted out the low level inputs into the amp.

The other wires which ran to the new amp/sub were power and ground wires (8 gauge), remote control which is basically plug in and run the lead up to the front, and remote power wire, which can either be connected to the remote wire on the back of your headunit, but I took the lazy option of wiring into the 12V ACC (via cigarette lighter) - as long as it's not wired into a constant 12V. All my wires ran down the passenger side sills.

thanks Nathan!

so to clarify as i am terrible with audio.
if i connect this http://m.jaycar.com.au/m_productView.asp?ID=AA0482
to the wires running to by stock sub i then connect that to my aftermarket amp, run power for the amp, a ground wire and a control wire to the stock head unit??

then obviously connect sub to amp.
cheers

Yes, this is what I've done with previous cars using the power to the built-in sub. Bear in mind, you may be double-amplifying as it's powered from the head unit/stock amp (unless removing the amp?)
I did this with my Calais and the power from my $600 set up ($400 450w mono block & $200 12" sub) blew away setups 2-3 times the price in terms of power.
Although Jaycar used to sell a better(?) high/low converter with gain controls which is what I used. It was about $25, and they still sold this last time I checked (12 months ago). Might be able to get hold of old stock?
