This is very similar to how mine operates.
phone sees my bluetooth kit, tasker turns on hotspot IF phone is charging, tablet connects.

That's very cool :D

I'm well under way with my Nexus install... I've just drawn up a bezel for un-between the nexus and the fascia.

Any thoughts - the main reason was to eliminate the silver edges of the nexus from being seen.

I've called a few plastics and steel places, and they will make one up for around 26-55 dollars.

Cheers,

Looks good. How will it attach to the fascia and nexus 7 though? IE. glue, wedge it in, screws, clips, etc?

I'm thinking glue, Something thin so the screen and fascia wont have any gaps. I actually picked them up today, the company made me 2 for the price of 1.
I was worried that It would make the Tablet sit too far back in the dash and/or look out of place, but they are so thin, and they did'nt even taper off the inside edges - and that;s because theyre so thin anyways haha

I will post the results up soon, I'm still waiting for a 12v to 5v converter from HK. Pretty sure its coming by Donkey... aka surface..

I'm planning to paint one matte black, and then

What you guys think for mounting ?

Looks good Mike, want to sell me the second one? I'll pay you full price of course..

How about a good double sided tape on to the screen of the tablet?? 3m or scotch or something of similar quality? Otherwise, you could run a bead of silicon in the corners where the JDM fascia meets the custom bezel.

Does the nexus 7 have a light sensor on the front? Will the bezel cover it? I guess doesn't matter if you have autobrighness off.

It does, right next to the camera.. I found that it didn't really work so am using Tasker to control my screen brightness in conjunction with times.

I've designed the Bezel so that the camera and light sensor are not covered.

Over the weekend I purchased a Nexus 7 2nd gen (2013) 32GB/wifi tablet at JB Hifi for $279 (price matched to Officeworks)
Also got a Steelie car mount kit for $39 (http://www.niteize.com/product/Steelie- ... nt-Kit.asp) and a magnetic case/stand for $17 from JB.
And I bought a Kogan Bluetooth adaptor about 2 weeks ago for $19 on special (http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/home-stereo ... oth-audio/) and a 12V cigarette --> USB adaptor for $5 a few months back.

Clearly mine isn't half as neat as an in-dash install and will require charging on occasion, but for $359 I have navigation, music, email, Torque, etc in my car, connected via Bluetooth (via AUX in from centre console) to the McIntosh system, and most importantly it's removable which means I can use the tablet elsewhere. I can play music and run the maps/nav at the same time - the voice guidance pauses the song playing and resumes after the announcement, which works well. The positioning of the tablet is higher than I'd like but mounting the base lower on the cubby lid may have prevented it from being opened.

For anyone else who might be considering this, please note the following:

1. the ball bearing with 3M adhesive stuck to the air vent surround with ease (and can be removed with fishing line apparently without damaging the plastic), but the magnet came off straight away so I had to super glue it to the case; and
2. the Kogan BT device won't operate when on charge (which is via USB) :angry2: , however the battery life seems pretty good (reportedly "up to 6-9 hours, standby up to 150 hours") and it charges quickly (30 mins?)....although I reckon i've used it for 10+ hours without a charge. If there was a way to modify the internals so that charge mode doesn't turn it off it would be great.
3. some people think magnets will harm your tablet, but all the research I have done suggests magnetic fields don't affect flash memory (and bear in mind most cases are magnetic). And I believe this product has been around for a couple of years in the US (was originally a starter company before being bought by Nite Ize) so it would have been pulled from sale if it damaged devices.

I sort of rushed into this because I wanted it done quickly, but other solutions for a removable Nexus set up could be:

OPTION 1
2 or 4 x neodymium magnets glued to the back of the air vent surround and other 2 x 4 glued to the tablet case - similar to this: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin ... ll-157129/

-or-

OPTION 2 (I haven't seen/tried this, but imagine it could work)
Kidigi (or similar) qi charging dock as the 2nd gen has built-in wireless charging: http://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au/product ... xus-7-2013
attached to a cubby mount baseplate: http://www.cubbymounts.com/2005-2009.html

I think this could work really well and the wireless charging would be great, but I don't know how secure it would be if the tablet is in a case and doesn't fit in snugly. Also may mean sacrificing the cubby and the dock might protrude too far and be in the way.

My aim for the future would be to modify a Qi dock to have folding sides and retract back into the cubby using a spring-loaded gearing/lock mechanism (such as those used in an adjustable phone mount) - that would be the ideal set up! :D

PS. although this is designed for phones, nor tablets, the magnet is very strong and I couldn't get it to fall off despite testing with very hard braking and throwing the car around corners on Sat night, and then again on a cruise yesterday. It moved slightly (1cm) to the side around hard corners but that's it. I don't think it would be strong enough to hold a 10" tablet though.

I have the McIntosh PF-28241 head unit in a post face lift. After reading this thread it seems like most of you have a different model which has a 3.5 aux input in the back of the head unit?

I have the Subaru auxiliary cable which I ran in a couple of years ago, and it connects to the HU via x2 square din plugs.
Forgive me if I've missed this in the thread somewhere but has any one modified this cable to allow connection of their tablets?

The opposite end in the centre console, attaches to the aux female input via a din plug as well. :?
