Hi,

I am staring this topic to document mods and upgrades to my '01 GX Special Edition

Image

This pic is when I picked it up from the paint shop after a cat sat on the bonnet one night and the dogs attacked it!

I have a spare room full of suspension parts ready to install. I have already installed B4 side skirts, it is already running vapour phase lpg injection and will soon have a DIYPNP Megasquirt. I also hope to install some HID projectors from TheRetrofitSource.

more to come....

reserved for suspension

Sitting in my spare room;
Front LCA Whiteline ALK comfort version
Nylothane LCA front bushes
Full set of KYB Struts/shocks
Full set of Aurora springs in low from industrial springs
Nylothane steering rack bushes
Nylothane trailing arm bushes
Front and rear 20mm whiteline sway bars
Nylothane front sway bar bushes (for some reason the supplied whiteline ones are far too big and needed to order gen2 front, which lists as a rear part)
Nylothane Rear Heavy duty sway bar links (universal cut to size adjustable ball joint style)
Nylothane Front Heavy duty adjustable sway bar links (these are meant for lca with single mounting tag so I have combined custom half made from stainless tube and 10mm rod ends and boots)

Possibly more, hopefully this makes as big a difference as I expect.

I hope to get all this stuff installed this weekend.

reserved for engine bay

Have cam belt and front seals ready to go, as soon as I get time as I just ticked over 200000km

I also have cam cover gaskets kits on order. The plug tube seals leak into the tubes :( and I should really check and adj the valve clearances, esp as it is running on lpg.

Member Profile - Arjag's Gen3 - MegaSquirt ECU Upgrade

Postby arjag » Mon Sep 30, 2013 5:06 pm

reserved for ecu upgrade

I am undertaking this project to improve the fueling as I think the stock ecu does a pretty average job. Dont get me wrong, it is reliable and works but run's far to rich to the point of smelling of sulphur dioxide, like lots of modern over rich cars do. I would also like to leverage off of the dual table capability of the megasquirt to acheive more aggressive tuning when running on lpg too.

The biggest advantage that I see is in the future when I get totally jack of this gutless 2L motor I can either put in a ej20 turbo or the more conservative approach of a ej25 with AVCS (subaru VVT) or VVL and at the very least get get an extra 29kw.

In the post;

DIYPNP Megasquirt + sequential injector mod. - from diyautotune
Bluetooth to serial adaptor and 10hz bluetooth gps. - from efi analytics (will buy the software, TunerstudioMS + MegaLogViewer + Shadow Dash MS, when i need it as shipping time is not an issue)

Already have;

LC-1 Wideband O2 sensor kit - from inovate motorsports
KnocksenseMS knock conditioning circuit - from viatrack
old hp laptop with car charger and always on cig lighter circuit installed.
Samsung tablet for running Shadow Dash (hope it works)

I intend to set this up so that it is completely compatable with the standard harness and sensors. This will make more work for myself, I know, but this way if anything goes wonky I can just re-install the original ecu in 20 seconds flat.

Member Profile - Arjag's Gen3 - Arduino in control

Postby arjag » Mon Sep 30, 2013 5:07 pm

For all of the stupid/neat stuff that the factory ecu controls that is not engine related I am going to use Arduino[s] to control.

For things like;
blinking the engine warning lamp in case Power Steering pressure issue
Controlling the Aircon and letting it only come on when evap switch and blower fan and push button is enabled. (also for adding a timer based econ mode to AC)
Controling the Main and Sub radiator fan's based on speed/temp/ac (or whatever crazy thing I decide)
When to activate the PURGE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE
Calibrate the speedo when/if i ever get some 17's (After Gen4 pre facelift 5 spoke wheels) even though it should only be 1.65% out.

Member Profile - Arjag's Gen3 - Random Questions

Postby arjag » Mon Sep 30, 2013 5:31 pm

Random Questions;

How much current does the IACV draw? (more than 800ma per channel?)

What is the easiest way to add an eco mode do my aircon? It works too well and it seems crazy to use the heater to subdue it. One idea is a adjust time delay on the circuit between the evaporator temp sensor and the ecu.

Will the springs I got be too harsh/low? Well no one can answer this for me, will have to find out myself...

What the heck is a dwelling? "CO RESISTOR"?

What controls the interior lamp dimming and timer?

Why does the ECU care about the fuel level?

Is reinforcement required for rear sway bar mounts. From looking around it seems to be the case. There seems to be the AVO orange one that bolts up to the bottom of the rear end mount and the cusco ones. The cusco ones look like it would be pretty easy to make something similar out of a largish hunk of angle iron.

I am sure I will think of more :o

Oh, of course, the B4 side skirts.

my ride did not get them standard and that made me sad. I got some off of ebay for ~150 delivered from a wrecker. I had already purchased a 20pack of the 10mm clips on ebay expecting this to be all I needed as that was the only holes in my sill panels (6 per side I think, possiibly 7, will count when I take pics and find the measurements to share). Unfortunately there was a row of clips down each side that I spent quite a while scratching my head how to deal with.

I ended up buying some door clips from auto store and using the only 4 left on the skirts when they were delivered for the ends. I measured and measured and test fitted and put lithium grease on the clip holders and test fitted and produced witness marks and checked again. After quite a bit of stressing I pulled the trigger on the drill and filled my sill panels with holes. Turns out I got the measurements right and after I let the paint dry to rust protect the holes the skirts mounted up really well.

Of course the silver of the B4 and my special edition was different so they do not colour match quite right. May save up to get them sprayed. The brute that pulled them off at some point in history wrecked the clip retainers on the lh one and I had to epoxy them all back together before fitting. Luckily they still fit up.

still needs a wash...

Looks like your car will soon be much nicer to drive.

I feel there are great gains to be had in the looks department by changing the rims.

You may not need to recalibrate your speedo, when I moved from 17s to 18s on my B4 it got more accurate (because of the factory margin between indicated and actual speed).
