I'm looking at upgrading myself.

I can confirm that you can run the standard turbo with a FMIC.

Unsure what figures you can expect for just that mod, remember, most people would have a heap more done before they get to that level.

Just remember the stock turbo is pretty small... you might not have enough volume to fill the core, thus resulting in pressure drops.

double posting trying to overtake the tangler's post count..

the pressure drop should be negligible with a quality system you might get some lag but it should be sfa

What brand are you getting? How much $$?

A lot of people have bought cheap units and have had headaches so dont bother.

On a gen IV you need to spend about the 2k mark to get a decent unit that will do the job.

Then get the Phat weight loss system. The man took about a meter out of a GREDDY (I think) systems pinping!!

i have fitted several FMIC to GT's over the last year with small to large mods and only hade good results.

and as far as the turbo being to small for a FMIC RUBBISH its all about good design

OH! have you ever seen a post saying i fitted a FMIC to my Lib and lost power or had no gains?

as for other mods you should only take the word of someone (which could be anyone) that has done the type of work you are looking at having done and make sure they are good at what they do as there are MANY MANY MANY MANY very poor car modifiers out there who just get it all wrong when TRYING to mod your cars

DO YOUR HOME WORK AND HAVE A REAL GOOD LOOK AT WHAT YOUR BUYING FOR THE MONEY BEFORE YOU HAND OVER THE DOLLARS "PLEASE"

mICHAEL

PS: MRT SU*K .....big name, poor quality, over priced and give out bullshit dyno numbers Hmmm

Nobody said anything about losing power, and yes you will gain, but you will get lag, and lose bottom end. You can compensate that with a tune to advance timing to a certain degree, but it's physical lack of volume until your turbo spins up.

On the other hand... good thing it's a small turbo because it should get to building full boost sooner :p

let me start by saying

LAG IS OVER RATED

a turbo that has responce at low rpm and will make power at the high end does not and will not ever exist so you do your best to pick the correct turbo (which take experience which you can not read on the net only feel) that will give you a balanced power curve which will need other surporting mod to make this all safe and reliable for that ever day use

for all you out there who dont want to lose 100-500 rpm in turbo response in order to make more power DONT MOD!!!!

as you can tell by my post count being one of the first few members i dont post a lot but i dont talk alot of SH*t or give untryed or or misleading advice eighter but im getting tired of all the bad advice being given out of late

so this is my advice for today
NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER EVER listen to anybody who hasent eighter dont the job or drive a car with the mods you are inquirying about or you will end up with a bum steer and wasting your money

Me Again :)

I should clarify and quantify my statement, in fear of looking like someone with 'no experience' or someone who 'talks shit' and has 'no experience'.

Depends on your goal in what you want to do with your car. If you want mid-high power, then FMIC is the way to go - in terms of physical attributes FMIC is definitely going to give you the colder air charge. The only downside is that you have longer piping, and larger diameter piping.

FMIC is not for those who want low-midrange. For me, this is where I fall - I want responsiveness on tap, and I don't want to chase big dyno numbers. I want a car that's fun to drive on the street, and which gives me punch from lowdown.

I've driven cars with FMIC setups, some good, some bad; some with stock turbos, some with aftermarket turbos - as a near-direct comparison, an ST205 GT-Four with 2.5" and with 3" FMIC on the stock CT20b turbo provides totally different levels of responsiveness. The lag was tolerable, but noticeable - it depends on whether you can live with it for the kick later. An ECU tune also helped a lot to make it less laggy.

Whether you can adapt that experience to the EJ20 with the VF38/TD04HLA is up to you - the Liberty's turbos are smaller, and have 12 years of technological development over the aged steel-wheel turbos.

Michael, I'm not here to make enemies, I'm just merely posting my experiences, and the experience of others. You may not agree, but this is what forums are for, to post thoughts, no? Granted my experiences may not be entirely applicable to this car in particular, but this is what I've learnt over time. Having been in the car modding game for six years, I've learnt a lot along the way, but I'm not one to say that I know everything.

Boys.. Calm down! we are rapidly decending into the sort of bickering I would expect in a Holden or Ford forum.

I am getting a customer made I/Cbar and plate,.. I have had a look at a few of his other setups and it looks very very good..

My two main concerns are:
a) pressure drop.. there has to be a certain amount, but how much.. (ie what have people experienced in drop (psi)
b) modifcations to the front grill.. I have opted for a black I/C as I am keen to avoid any un necessary attention.. dont want to hack half of the bumper off!

On a side note.. an AVO turbo will be installed later to support the new exhaust, FMIC and custom tune (will be retuned to suit, and upgraded injectors & fuel pump will go in at the same time)

if you select a sard 265L/H pump you will not need to up grade the injectors unless you head over the 235KW ATW so dont let any one tell you otherwise or you'll just be wasting 600+ dollars as only two companys make injectors that fit the 03-05 GT's
