Hi all

My 07 tbSTI is coming up to 70,000kms and I'll be doing the scheduled service in the next couple of weeks.

I presume the timing belt is original. Normally this is changed at 112,500 / 125,000kms from memory.
I spoke to STI Docklands who said it should also be changed based on it's age, and at 6+ years old and the average kms 15-20k per year, this would be equivalent to having done ~100,000kms and therefore should be done now.

I'm wondering if others have heard the same from other sources? Sounds to me like drumming up extra business, and I don't have the cash to waste on unnecessary servicing because the mortgage makes me poor.
On the other hand, I had a timing belt break years ago on a Honda Prelude and it cost me over $3k in repairs (albeit the car had done 180,000kms), so I don't want to go through that again.

I'd prefer to leave the belt until the next major service at around 87ks if that's relatively safe. Probably be 12-16 months from now as I don't do many kms.

It's true.

All car service intervals are based on either time or kms, whichever comes first.

Your service manual should tell you what the timeframe/kms are for each service.

how does your belt look?

I'm in a similar position at 5 years I've only got 80k on the clock but I will wait either 1 more year or until it hits ~100k.
I don't see anything wrong with my belt and I don't hear any strange noise so I'm happy to wait a little while.

Although mine is a 2.5i, I always rev the nuts off it and thrash it on the way to work.

But if I had an sti I would treat it better, probably would do the service in your position.

Sorry my mistake I was looking at the wrong belt.

However following the research I've just done in the last few minutes, it should be possible to see a section of the belt by taking off just 3 or so bolts to get part of the cover off.

I'll attempt that myself on my next day off.

Wow 1800? Was quoted just shy of 700 for 125k service which is getting done next week.

Actually my service cost $1601.20 The extra was for a valve cover gasket that had to be replaced. Not much of a difference I know. I guess from now on I have to be expected a bit more wear and tear expenses to pop up.

Heard back from old mate at Subaru;

There should only be 4 idler pulleys in this kit – plus the tensioner pulley (5 in total). I’ve circled the pulleys included in the kit in the below picture:

Yeah, that's the funny thing. When I rang up Subaru parts for a quote, the parts bloke said that the kit comes with everything needed for just under $600. But on the invoice the additional pulley is separate from the kit. So who knows. I think as long as all the shits there, then it should be fine. I got charged $480 for the kit incl the additional pulley.

Those engine cover clips can be had from ebay for not much. But I got a pleasant surprise when I looked under my bonnet after the service, ALL the clips were replaced with brand new ones.

I'd rather cicumcise myself with a rusty butter knife than do my timing belt myself

Think i'll roll the dice and to the kit... or maybe show said quote to a local dealer and see if they can match it to save on post.
I bought a bunch of clips from eBay, none of which are the same as the genuine Subaru ones. If you can track some down, i'd be rashy all over it.
