Hi guys

wondering if there is a pssoble way of running a second screen off my head unit eg so that my nav is being displayed on one screen up where my cubby currently is and then i still have my normal screen down below in my replacement facia?

my other option i have is using a spare alpine 7 inch screen i got a few years back for nothing which has 2 AUX inputs and could some how make up a connection to run the nav straight to it if possible? or some sought of other display eg iphone

It would be like extending your desktop on a PC. I know my Pioneer head unit has a rear screen output which will display a different image on any screens connected to it but that's just for DVDs etc. I don't think you'd be able to connect the navigation to the screen, it requires software in the head unit to operate also.

i am also considering instead of the 7 inch alpine screen i might use my mrs ipad mini that sits in the cupboard never getting used.

would be able to get the on off power from the alpine head unit, connection via either the ipod/ipad full speed connector or the currently un used aux input in the back of the head unit

could use the ipad for GPS, apps like dash command and a few others.

its not a Nexus 7 like most people are using but i have it lying around which removes the cost of buying a tablet in the first place and i dont think many if anyone has done it so more then willing to give it a try

iPad mini would definitely work. Using the USB connector would allow you to control audio playback through the head unit, the only thing is that you wouldn't get any navigation audio.

Alternatively, use the USB connector for power only and control audio playback through the iPad mini connected to the head unit through the AUX in.. That would also give you navigation volume but you lose the functionality of having 2 different things displayed on each screen as the head unit would need to remain on the aux in function.

yeah makes complete sence to me.

i dont often use the sound in nav anyway more just the visual so that wouldnt really bother me at all cos i can easily look across to the ipad mini for the maps and i like being able to listen to music at the same time.. i dont often go to many places where i need voice guidence so when i do it would only be for a short amount of time.

im going to try both connection methods i think and see which one i like better (full speed V aux) i think AUX will be better as ill be able to have more going on on the ipad, although the only real difference is if i use fullspeed i just wont be able to control the music on the ipad will just be through the headunit menu which isnt hard to use.

do you know if i will have any fitment issues using an ipad mini and the japan parts facia? like will i still be able to use the home button is the the one thing im worried about

If you use the AUX in from the headunit you wont have the same sound quality. As you will be getting the sound from the 3.5mm jack, the ipad will be doing a DAC conversion as opposed to using the headunit DAC when connected via USB.

I had a look at the W502 manual last night, and have found the following:

Under System Setup, find AUX IN and set it to NAV.
Also make sure that AUX OUT is set to ON.

Once these two are done, connect your external screen to the AUX OUT on the back of the headunit.

Then go to Source, touch RSE in the top left (I think) and select AUX or NAV whichever is displayed.

See if that works.
