i have started a trend! ever since i posted a few months back my HG going everyones is going. This is crazy! mines been fixed for a few months now and ive completey forgotten about it just in love with the car again. id recomend getting the Cosworth HG and Arp 2000 headstuds to everyone its worth the extra money doing it right so you dont get any future problems, it gives you that extra peice of mind :

Everyone ive spoken to about these motors keeps telling me that the standard pistons and block are shit and that if you strengthen the head/studs then the biggest week link is the bottom end.

Im making alot of enquiries about the bottom end and once ive done the research im gunna talk to the wife about hopefully a closed deck block and forged rods and pistons. Dont think i need a sleeved block but if someone has a closed deck AND sleeved block thats actually resonable in price then, just maybe it will happen.

Let me know about any quotes you get. Obviously if we're paying $3k already , a bit extra to ensure better performance and longevity is probably worth it.

And I've been talking to different people/mechanics etc and it seems like I may have bought my car like this and they put a gasket sealant in it and sold it. When i bought my car and Kiddo did a fix tune on it, that code P0171 was turned off. So kiddo and i said lets fix the tune and turn it back on. So because I have done more mods and tuned it and pushed it.... Bye bye!

The interesting part was the other codes turned off in your previous tune which are now turned back on... All the cylinder misfire codes were disabled

I had a think about it - I think if you don't have any other symptoms of blown hg its worth investigating whether someone has used chemi weld or the like in an attempt to seal a cracked head / blown headgasket

Forgot to look at the composition of the gunk in the reservoir tank, but if it has a brownish : reddish hue to it, it may be some sort of short term head sealant

Okay so all this talk of HG's recently had really got me worried about my car. Not that I've noticed anything wrong at all, everything seems to be running great.

After seeing the pic posted above of the coolant bottle I decided to check mine. Now I checked my coolant levels etc. only a week or two ago, and I don't recall seeing any issues. But, tonight when I checked I have noticed some black particles in the bottle similar to in Dave's photo (but no where near as bad).

So, decided to take the car for a short drive, let it get up to temp. Torque app on my phone was showing coolant temperature while driving of around 90 degrees C - is that normal?

When I got home I parked the car, and with it still running watched the coolant in the reservoir... Doing this I noticed some small bubbles in the coolant, and what appeared to be whisps of smoke coming out!

So considering all the discussion lately, this sounds really bad doesn't it!? What should I do next?

It's ok you own a Gen V, the only thing wrong with them is the way they look.

The temp is fine, how serious are those bubbles? Maybe provide some pics/video, how constant are the bubbles? Could just be air.

Might try to get some photo/video tomorrow night or on the weekend.

Didn't seem like much, just a bubble every minute or so while the car was still hot and idling - I have no idea if that is normal or not, as I've never ever looked at it before until reading about the HG issues lately.

You're getting paranoid? Try owning a Gen 4. Head gaskets, AVCS VVT angles, OCVs, timing belts, idlers..............but hey I wouldn't own any other car

I think an attempt to seal is probably unlikely - I spoke to the prev owner today who said he had no problems (and incidently never did any other mods, including a tune or the dump pipe, despite ordering parts). And I bought it the morning after it was traded to the dealer. Went to a mechanic today with a good reputation for working on Subarus (Cromwood - who said they were doing at least one HG per week on 4 cylinder Subis!) and they thought it probably was the HG but that it wasn't that bad, and they'd seen a lot worse. From a quick inspection, the mech thought coolant hasn't entered the oil - no milky colour. After driving home tonight the temp under the bonnet seemed warmer than usual (but so was the weather by at least 5 degrees compared with the last few months.... and maybe I'm just being paranoid?), but the expansion tank wasn't bubbling even after I left idling for a few mins.

Probably need to take it back there next week to get it pressure tested, etc before doing anything further.

Not me - I was going to put up a pic anyway - good to share evidence of potential problems.
