So turns out my flywheel may of been replaced, it doesn't appear the be the right size. Nick's chatting to Subaru to see if it's the OEM part and where it may of come from as it looks to match a 5 speed. May need to replace it as well. He thought that someone may of just done a conversion from a standard GT but chassis num says otherwise.

Confused, I wonder why the wrong flywheel has been put in at one point...

This is not as uncommon as you might think and I reckon most likely your car was built with it.

A few engine builders I spoken to have told me of similar findings when opening up these cars. The flywheel being the most common part that seems not to be the right one used. There are others..

I have a conspiracy theory which I've shared with a few friends. The MY07 and MY08 Liberty was built during the GFC. Most manufacturers were light on funds and some builds may have been parts bin left overs used to manage costs and keep the doors open.

Again it's just a theory and probably best discussed over too many beers.

So what's the likely-hood of me scoring a new one from Subaru for free? I'm the second owner. Surely there would be way to track that down and pin it to the, or at least they'd have records of it (at least I think they would)?

My theory is that 06 build MY07s are perfect in practically every way...
It was a golden era in car building before the GFC hit home.

I went to ALOT of trouble with exedy to get my right clutch.Spoke to 3 different people .

In the end they didn't have our listings, 6 speed liberty 07/08. It ended up being a GDB or something wrx Sti clutch !! I thinks it the same model WRX Sti that our brembo's are from.!!

But saying all this my clutch is a SO (sports organic) and its a piece of shit.... Heavy as buggery and will shudder if you don't rev it to get off the line.

Any chance of digging up the model number you've got in there?

The shudder might be due to the fly wheel wasntcmachined Dan

I believe Jackson sells a 2.5T 6mt clutch that is just right, not too heavy or light and not rattly.

Or try Exedy Pro Kit on Amazon maybe.

Already got one its the : FJK8294 according to the website http://www.exedy.com.au/clutch-finder it should be the correct one and a 6 Speed. Now I need to confirm with Nick what the Part Number is on the one his got at the shop ><

I reckon they've sent out a FJK-7853

Naa flywheel is all good, got it machined and put in properly. The clutch was SERIOUSLY heavy and was like a button clutch when 1st installed. Its heaps better now, but i guarantee you that if u got into my car you would be like WTF, its like pushing concrete. Im just used to it and now have a massive left leg.

Yeah please do, looks like the part numbers match. But Nick say's it's definitely a single mass 5 speed. Is this just a huge co-incidence? His just confirming a few dimensions but I'll probably end up sending off the flywheel to get machined and using the clutch that's there... I'm tired of waiting ;(

hahaha, cool thanks. Well good news on my clutch and flywheel, the measurements on the 08 came back at 230mm so it is what it's meant to be. Nick hasn't seen anything like this before, but i'm back on track. Also getting a few pics off him shall post them up once they arrive.

Boostaddict / Tomthebomb, any updates with head gasket potential fix and costs?

I briefly met with a couple of forum members tonight (fortunately a few experts were present - Bruce, Mick, Owen, etc) who noticed I had oil residue in my expansion tank.

I had no indication of any problems with the car- no loss of power, blowing smoke, burning oil or coolant, smells/sounds, etc. It drives perfectly (as it should with only 68xxxx kms!!!)

I've only had the car for 4 months, it has no mods other than an exhaust (and I presume standard tune), and due to the low kms and condition of the car, I didn't get an extended warranty. It's about 1 month out of the 3 month statutory warranty provided by the dealer.

Will be taking it to a local Subaru mechanic tomorrow (Cromwood) for a look, and then possibly off to fight the dealer for repair costs.

I'm absolutely devastated, and having just bought our first house, have no money to fix it
