Ok, will start with the drivers side OCV and will go from there.

Anyone have a Subaru part number? Might see if the car dealer I got the car from will supply them at cost... (very doubtful that it would be a warranty job at this stage).

10921AA080 Subaru OEM Oil Control Valve.

Paid $94 each + postage from Celtic.

Best to try and find someone to combine postage with as you can fit at least 4 sets per the standard box postage price they charge.

Interestingly the longer oil change intervals prescribed these days from factory seem to be having an affect on the OCV's life span.

Since switching to BMW's they too have a similar issue with the Vanos system with sludge buildup. This is being blamed on longer oil change/service intervals modern cars seem to be have. Best stick to 5000kms or every 3 months seems to be the thinking at the moment.

Yeah the car I bought was a fleet car and only ever serviced by the service book (around 10,000 apart).

Is part 10921AA080 the same for right and left side?

Cheers,
Kim

Both sides use the same part.

Upper engine cleaner, oil flush, new oil filter and a gut of fresh Magnatec 15-40 diesel oil... took it for a drive for 15 minutes and OCV logs were all over the place... (possibly worse than before) - possibly dislodged some gunk, might see if it free's up with the Magnatec over the next week or so. If not, then it's new OCV time.

Can someone please explain this phenomenon! How does the type of gearbox behind the motor affect the functioning of the AVCS system. Is it simply the higher demand / RPM variability between gear changes or poor gear selection vs engine load that are capable with a MT.

Question to blow minds: In theory, if one were to convert a vehicle with AVCS sync issues from MT to AT, surely the issue would not just disappear.

Pics I made of doing the drivers side OCV swap.
Remove snorkel, sfb, crossover pcv hose, loosen the coolant feed bottle. Etc.
It's good to have help pulling the injector guard aside, the OCV comes out like a rifle bolts due to the odd shape.
The gaurd can easily be bent back into shape with a shifter.
Passenger side is remove battery, oil filler neck, pcv crossover hose.
Use a blunt flat head to gently pop the OCV from its o ring then rifle bolt it out.
Check the oil filler o ring before refitting ;)

So in the interest of investing in a prevention rather than a ($200+ every 100-150kms) cure, is there a section of AT wiring that can be retro fitted into a MT wiring loom. I'm still perplexed as to what section of wiring (the only difference in sensors should be gearbox related) this is could be and as to how it plays such a pivotal role in the functioning of the AVCS...more importantly as to why Subaru would skimp on it.

Adequate earth shielding in the loom seems to be issue around the RH can sensor. Don't think they skimped but the issue was fixed by late 08+.

I have the tactrix cable - what software's the best to use to log? It seems the Torque and OBD Pro don't have the VVT AVCS stuff in their set of paramaters to log...
