Great post CarDoc. Did you create a build thread for your own vehicle? Would be an interesting read also.

Yes, I do. Somewhere on here is a short thread on it. I think its under Tim's Raptor section. But here's the build thread, updated up to yesterday.

Sleeper VDC

Found it: Outback 3.0 w/ single port heads - SUPERCHARGED

And here: SLi - Subarcharged

Then there's the link to a video under my signature.

Tried to flash a new image to my ECU today and did the usual write test before attempting a write. All seemed good so I proceeded to write. All seemed ok, so ECUflash told me to turn the ignition off and I then disconnected the green test connectors. I then turn the keys to the start position, and...

Nothing happened!!!! :angry2: I think I may have "bricked" the ECU. :( Cannot explain why as everything looked good and the ECUFlash session completed without errors. Spent the rest of the day pulling off trim and removing carpet to find the ECU. Finally got it out of the car. Will be off to a local tuning haouse tomorrow to see if they can un-brick it for me and load my N-1 image. We live and learn!!!!

Sucks to hear mark.
Did you try turn the ignition on too quickly after the flash? Or maybe your battery is a bit iffy?

So frustrating, and it's not like having a spare ECU on hand is an effective solution due to the key coding...

Yes, the battery is nearing end of life, but not that you would have guessed as there have been no other indications. I looked at the little bubble that is supposed to provide a visual indication and it was black, so Justin has organised an Optima Yellow Top for me. That will be far better than having to go thru this again.

Do not think I turned it on too quickly as I wait for about 2 seconds before I tried to crank after switching to the on position. Watched the dials spin and settle, then crank. Could have been a corrupted file from download or during the copy from USB stick to tuning PC. There are too many hops to know which was the cause.

BBB, did you make one of those Unblocking circuits? Someone should do this in Melbourne. Might have to be me if RTR can't fix it...

Something needs to be done for sure.

Can a 12v battery charger be used whilst reflashing, for safety?

New Optima Yellow Top will go into the car tomorrow, ready for when I get the ECU back. Thanks again Justin.

Oh, did I not post that info about the ECU?

ECU could not be done by RTR as they are up to their eyeballs in work preparations for the World Time Attack. Dan at RTR makes a harness, so the cost would be quite labour intensive.

The alternative arranged by Matt (Kido Tunes) was to post the ECU to Rich at Entra Racing in Canberra. Rich opens the ECU and does a temporary soldering job, directly onto the appropriate points of the EEPROM to blank it, then re-write it, at least I think that's what he does. And very reasonably priced I might add. Less than 1/10th of the replacement costs from Subaru.

ECU got to Canberra overnight and expecting an update soon, fingers are crossed for some positive news.

Sucks to hear mark but good that it is being sorted

Some advice if I may - have an auto elec specializing in canbus based vehicles run an oscilloscope through the vehicle before reinstalling your ecu - just to rule out any bad earths or short somewhere.

The last thing you want is to install the unbricked ecu and then have the same thing happen again. Triple check all your ecu earths under the dash and to the chassis from the main engine harness - both sides.

Good news! The ECU was "un-bricked" successfully yesterday by Rich at Entra Racing in Canberra and will be express posted back today. Hopefully have it back on Friday for a Saturday morning install. Fresh new battery as well, and some checking of the earth points, although my car does not use CANBUS as widely as the facelift series, still worth at least a visual and static check. Pretty hard to do a dynamic one unless the ECU is installed and engine running. Out with the wiring diagrams from the Workshop Manual to chase those little suckers!!!

I often have my car on the trickle charger when flashing and I also make sure that either the laptop is plugged into power (cig lighter or via power point) or fully charged.
