Or any mechanic with a scan tool: log VVT angles at 1500, 2000 and 3000 RPM.

Either way if there is significant left to right side lag or any oscillation you want to clean or preferably replace the OCV's.

I'm starting to get some of the symptoms. Will log the car at my next opportunity...

If you have it... it would be the first auto I have ever seen with it.

Sorry, Matt, are you saying this issue doesn't affect auto trans cars?

Correct. Log yours, the RH OCV is the most obvious graphable parameter :) The issue only affects manual 07 Forester, Manual 07 WRX and Manual LGT/TBSTI

VVT angle right/left logging - looks fairly accurate, but there's a couple of spots where the left peaks a lot higher (just briefly) - is that an indication that I need to have one of the sensors replaced? Or is it normal that on a good car there will be slight differences?

I just saw the attachment on my laptop and indeed the lag is pretty large on the far LHS of the graph...

Seems like a "How to replace OCVs" is needed, right BBB?

You could try cleaning them whilst actuating them with a 9v battery...

Ah bugger. Wonder if this would be covered under statutory warranty. Although given the car is not spitting out error codes or having any physical symptoms - probably not.

Is ACVS solenoids the same as OCV? (just working out what parts I need to find). And it's a DIY replacement?

Should I bother with the UEC and oil flush (maybe running Magnatec diesel oil for extra detergents) first? Or does it appear that this doesn't make any difference?

Replace the drivers side AVCS solenoid. It is known as an Oil Control Valve(OCV) Solenoid by Subaru. It regulates oil pressure to the AVCS cam gear

Does this provide enough current for them to open?

So if replacing OCV's doesn't help, then I'd need to look at doing cam gears as well? (guessing that is not cheap?)

Wondering if I should go in on this group-buy: http://www.flatironstuning.com/p-2126-2 ... gears.aspx

Cheaper via Celtic Motorsport. Not listed on their website, but send an email with your vin and he can quote.

Only consider the cam gears if the OCVs don't fix the issue. I had mine replaced at timing belt service time.
