The guy at mitre 10 tried to tell me I'll only be able to get it off with a kit that cost $500 so I went to supercheap and got this for 60. Works really well, definitely made installing them easier.

Getting to the rears was a nightmare though!
But the car looks and handles amazingly now so I'm really happy.

I'm surprised a $60 drill had enough torque to even undo a hand tight bolt ..

I have a $500 Milwaukee impact driver which can't even budge most bolts... Esp a bolt that a breaker bar wouldn't move. Don't know how a 12v drill will be handy around the hous either

I had a few mates over who couldn't get it to budge, we went to the hardware shop who said because it was put on with one it will be difficult to get off by hand. I figured it was on so tight because it hasn't been touched in 10 years...

12v impact driver possibly but wouldn't think it would budge a seized bolt.([i]but by the time you had a few mates have a go and than go to the hardware store the wd40 would of done its job and you could of possibly saved $60 and undone them by hand)[/i]

When I first changed my shocks over the rears especially were tight. I used a trick I read on legacygt.com where you use a breaker bar and a trolley jack as leverage. Just sit the end of the breaker bar on the jack pad and raise the jack to loosen the bolt. Just make sure you are loosening and not tightening. Works like a charm and no real effort required

Had no trouble getting mine off. Trust you have had an alignment done since? I marked the top bolt of the two you showed (sets camber) so it would be close when re-assembled.

I have never had an issue with these bolts, but tips for those who do:
-Jack her up, and put it on stands.
-turn the wheel full lock right to work on left wheell, and vice versa
-undo brake and ABS lines
-get another jack stand, a big 1/2 breaker, a 19mm and an extention6 inches should be fine.
-assemblke tool, rest the breaker on a jack stand that you match the height of the jack with
-add force and it shoiuld pop off.

Its strange to me that these were so tight, but i guess it happens.

On a side note, ryobi 18V rattle gun from bunnings is bloody awesome, will undo just about anything, CV nuts included.

I haven't had a wheel alignment done, I know I need to but I was waiting to get new rims first. Does it make a huge difference? How much does it usually cost?

it is mandatory, absolutely.
for safety x100 million, your camber etc may be off, and this affects cornering braking etc.
the suspension is what puts the rubber on the road, and thats the only part of the car in contact, so a good setup is essential
you can get them from 70-300, but most places under 100.
I get them twice a year, you would be surprised how much the alignment changes with km's

So you couldnt get it off by hand yet a $60 drill that runs off a cigarette lighter can undo the nut, Hmmmmmmmm....

^They are basic kits for doing roadside wheel changes.
They sort of spinup then engage.
I found out about them when researching cam gear removal - useful for someone because it was small enough to fit in the engine bay

Hitting a stubborn nut or bolt firmly (in line with the bolt, not across its length) with a drift can work wonders if the WD40 isn't penetrating, its one version of the famed 'Technical Tap' fixes.
