Some Audio Help

Postby Kody.B » Wed Jul 24, 2013 6:10 pm

So I have just purchased by headunit and I am waiting on the facia kit for the beginning of my audio mods.
Two main questions for the audio gurus:

First, I purchased it from JB Hifi where I ordered the Aerpro harness for my car through them. The guy from JB said that it would make some of the install plug and play, but because the HU I got has digital radio and some extras, some soldering would be necessary.
The only two things that I could think that would need soldering would be the Digital Radio antenna to the respective wire from the HU's harness, as well as the bluetooth microphone.
Would that be correct, or would there be other things?

Secondly, the system is a Pioneer and has "Appplay" where I can use the phone to use Satnav or whatever. There is a chord I need to buy seperately for it. Doing a quick search on eBay, I found the chord I need for $11 (better than the $59 from Pioneer). Being from Hong Kong, obviously it's a fake. Would that matter?

Thanks for any help you can give! :D

With a little research I've found that you need to install an AN-DAB1 antenna which appears to have a plug that simply plugs in to the rear if the head unit. Installation manual -> http://docs.pioneer.eu/Manuals/AN_DAB1_ ... on_manual/

As for the Bluetooth microphone, that is also plug and play, no soldering required. I'd suspect, as is always the case, that the JB 'salesman' isn't sure what he is talking about. If you purchased Aerpro harnesses with ISO connectors then it is simply plug and play provided the pins match up.

EDIT - and no, the eBay cord will work fine but the quality may not be there.

Awesome, thank you for your help Sean.

I am not sure whether the guy from JB has ordered the right one, so I will have to call them tomorrow to be certain. He mentioned soldering so perhaps he didn't order the one with the ISO connections. Hopefully they can alter the order

I will consider about the chord. It's probably not best to cheap out on it :/

The head unit will come with a harness that doesn't have ISO connectors actually so you'll need the Subaru harness without the ISO connectors also....... Which means you need to solder them together. Taking this route means you need the AP2001.

Alternatively, buy the APP090 and the APP8PIO4 and it will definitely be plug and play.

Ok, so to make it plug and play between Subaru/Pioneer, I need the APP090 and APP8PIO4?
I am guessing the APP8PIO4 plugs into the pioneer HU, makes that so the APP090 plugs straight in?

That's great, I've got the APP090 on order so I'll just add the APP8PIO4 tomorrow.

You're a legend Sean :D

Just double check the harness that is with the head unit first, it may have ISO connectors already.. That'll save you $25.

Doing the install yourself?

I'm sorry about the stupid question... But, how do you tell if the connectors are ISO?

Yeah I'm doing it myself, I'm hoping to get some experience out of it.
My old man has done a few audio upgrades in his time so hopefully he can help me out. Apparently running the new antenna and bluetooth mic will be the hardest part, if only for having to remove parts of the console and dash. Well, I hope that will be the hardest part

Wont have ISO connectors on it. Manufacturers have stopped putting ISO connectors on headunits because they would always get cut off and the wires would get soldered anyway.

I'd guess not. From what I can gather on Wikipedia, these aren't ISO

Sure isn't.

Audio installs are a piece of piss mate! Isn't your dad a sparky anyway? Should know a thing or two about twisting copper :)

Haha he sure is, it comes in handy some times.

Even so, the ISO plugs will be the way to go I think. I will have the interior in pieces running the antenna and bluetooth microphone so less work wiring is always a win haha
