Stiff steering around corners at speed

Postby Tublade » Fri Jul 12, 2013 1:38 pm

Not sure if this is the location to post this, but have started to notice lately when I take a corner a little faster then I should, I notice the car seemingly not want to turn and feels like it I've got a flat or that the power steering has failed. However when I take corners normally this doesn't happen. I've checked my tires and power steering fluid but they are fine.

speed sensitive power steering.

Check your belt tension/ condition too

Also could be a sign of a stuffed centre diff
Normally the rear tyres will travel less distance when turning than the fronts
If the CD is stuffed and locks, all 4 tyres must travel the same distance, making the car harder to turn (think on a 4x4 with locked diff's)

Tyer pressure is on 32 psi.

Doesn't happen all the time. But feels like driving a FWD in the wet without power steering.

Same symptoms I had at speed when my VCD was buggered (common issue)

I assume it does it when the car is nice and hot (after about 20 minutes driving.)

Do a test for me
when you're driving for that amount of time or more
find somewhere where you can do some full-lock turns.

See if you can feel the box/ shafts clunking and inside wheels trying to skip

Yeah it usually happens after driving for a while. Don't recall feeling the box/shafts clunking just the steer wheel gets really heavy and takes a bit to turn. But after that happens it doesn't do it again if I try to replicate the condition straight after it happens. Only after the car has been off for a while then heats up after driving for a while.
