I just bought an MY09 3.0R Spec B and the AM is not working at all. I've heard some slight static and even a faint connection but mostly it detects nothing and just scans through finding nothing not even static. Really dissapointed with this as it's still a relatively new car and I mostly listen to AM radio. Will have to use the AUX via digital radio instead for a while.

Any chance the back window has been tinted with a metallic film?

Hmm don't think so. Lately the AM has been working and for about 1 minute, I had it running once for as long as 10 minutes but it always disconnects abruptly while driving. Slight static and them bam nothing. I will double check the back window tinting.

That won't be the tinting then. It sounds more like a bad power connection to the antenna amplifier.

Today it worked for about 20 minutues - then when it cut out I put the volume on FULL and could still hear the radio but very faint. Sounds like an ampliphing issue? Because the signal is there just very faint. Do I need to remove the panels from the rear to access this amplifier connection?

Just a small note- my wife tells me that although we havent had AM for about a year now it does come in sometimes when a CD is being ejected and AM is the band selected, this isnt all the time - just sometimes evidently.

Doesnt help my diagnosing the fault but someone elses brain may be better at this.

Hi all,
I took delivery of an MY07 GT-B wagon on the weekend, my AM radio too isn't working. Love to know when someone finds an answer!

Question number one - is the back window tinted?
If yes, take it to a tinter and find out if it is a metallic film, as that's the most common AM killer.

Yep, it's tinted. My folks had an MY99 wagon and got the rear re-tinted (for other reasons) and it helped reception so I will look into that option initially. Cheers

Hi,
I have the same issue with AM reception on an 08 Sti. Used to cut in and out, progressively got worse, now has stopped working completely.
Went to my local car audio specialist - according to him a reasonably common problem. Fault is in the AM board in the head unit - the board needs to be replaced.
He removes the unit, sends to the service agent and then refits unit. Turn around usually with in a week. Estimated cost is $400 for the removal/refit/courier and repair.

Is AM worth $400......

Some weeks ago my radio started to play up, sounds exactly like the issue described by Mr Hankey. Wondering if the factor unit on my GT Spec B 07 model can be replaced with a new after market set-up?

A couple of months ago driving down the freeway, I accidentally hit the AM button, and dam me, my AM radio was working! It's still working. Weird!! I never checked the tint.
As for spending $400 on the AM radio, heck no! Much rather a decent head unit and amplifier, these things have no power :(

This would most likely only occur whilst breaking or when your headlights are on.

I have LED downlights in my house and they only affect the radio when the lights are turned on.

Was more interested in the long term affect of the led lights on AM radio , when braking there is a lot of static on AM, might be one of the causes
