4 x CEL Codes... fixes?

Postby 3.0R Madness » Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:40 pm

Hi guys, first timer here

I drove my 3.0R around my place for a wash this morning, no issues. I went to start it up at lunch time to head into town, and no start! Battery fine, and all the lights as well, then I noticed the CEL still on with a flashing cruise control light and "sports light", as I've seen is pretty common now from these threads, but new to me. After a search on how to read the codes, I pulled up the following codes, in this order:

EGI fail code
P0345 Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Signal Fault Bank 2 Subaru Engine Code P0345
P0340 Camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction Subaru Engine Code P0340
P0335 Crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction Subaru Engine Code P0335
P0011 Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced (Bank 1) Subaru Engine Code P0011

I've been able to find the codes, and handy with the tools, but stumped as to where to go from here. I'm out bush and a fair hike to the Subaru dealer on the back of a truck.

Anyone had a similar set of issues? Any ideas what the combination of codes mean? I can't even get it going to take it in to the workshop. Help appreciated.

Looks like you got some water in the sensor plugs. You'll need to let it dry out, or I you have compressed air blow out every wirin plug you can fid in the engine bay.

Can you hear the injectors clicking and can you tell if it has spark?
(You can use a long screwdriver like a stethoscope, tip on the injector and your ear on the handle.)

If you have neither, sounds like a crank sensor fault.

Cheers guys for the quick responses

  • Water in the Sensor plugs - Thanks Dropz, I didn't wash the engine bay at all, only the exterior, but we have had pretty high humidity the last weeks, so there might be some moisture lurking around. As for finding every plug, could you point me in the direction of an engine manual for the EZ30D, or where exactly are the camshaft sensors and the crankshaft sensors, (or are they one the same?). I guess it might be as easy as pulling out the offending sensors, give them a proper clean as well as the connectors, and put them back in. Thoughts?
  • Injectors Clicking - RX2SE, no I can't hear the injectors clicking, only a low motor sound like an electric pump, (fuel pump perhaps), when I go to ignition.
I read I can do an EMC reset so I can start her up, by disconnecting the battery negative terminal and pressing the brake pedal a few times, then reconnecting. This hasn't worked.

Do you think I could roll start it, or will the EMC not allow ignition?

Thanks for all your help again.

If the engine will crank over but wont fire then roll starting is pointless.

Generally speaking, if there is no injector pulse and no spark then the ECU has lost the crank signal (no TDC reference) and will not start.

The buzzing is more than likely fuel pump.

Does the security light on the dash go out when you insert the key?

Normal humidity won't fault the sensors. I was taking the assumption you'd sprayed over the engine.

They are all very similar faults so it is highly unlikely that its the sensors. As stated check if the key light turns off, if not it may be the ignition switch playing up.

I'm not an (H6) expert but since 3 of the cels are circuit malfunctions, I'd check the relevant loom and its main connectors, for damage, bite marks and general connectedness.

There's masses of diagrams in your workshop service manual - just google for a link to the WSM thats relevant to your MY year.

Indeed following the links you provided also check your oil level and battery voltage! In that order, then check the looms/plugs lol.

Hi guys, and thanks for the replies so far

I had tried an exhaustive search for WSM for MY06 over the last 2 nights, but to no avail and was getting pretty frustrated, however:

  • bigBADbenny - I persisted with the search and after an hour of no luck and countless old links with "file not found", managed to stumble over a very similar WSM for earlier H6DO engines (basically a 2004 Legacy Service Manual), which covers the error codes with diagrams, and step-by-step procedures on finding the fault on each sensor. Also has a very handy sensors diagram. It's getting late, so I'll give it a go tomorrow. Many of the procedures it goes through is as you stated BBB, so thanks in advance
Link to manuals for those following
  • Dropz & RX25SE - The ignition seems fine, with the alarm disarmed and security light going out as per normal. The ignition sequence works normally through to ON, but further selecting to ignition remains dead.
Now even if I'm able to clean the sensors, I'm not sure if the ECM will recognise that the sensors will be reading correctly, with the present error codes still stopping the engine start. My thinking is that I'd need the Subaru Computers hooked up to the ECM to clear the codes, before it will allow me to start... just thinking out loud.

cheers & beers fellas

PS: I would have thought it would be easy in this day and age to find an exact PDF WSM for your Manu Year, in a single search!

Oil & volts are fine, I replaced the battery myself only 2 months ago, and had the standard service 2.5 months ago at the Subi dealership

Through the old WSM I found, I pulled out the camshaft sensors, cleaned the connectors, and the same with the crankshaft sensor, (not easy to extract without removing a few other parts). All too no avail unfortunately...

So I got the girlfriend to give us a push, and managed to jump start it anyway!!!! We still have the CEL and the flashing mode and cruise lights, and even after a warm up and driving it up to a place for another easier roll start, she still wont start from scratch.

But now that it can start her from the roll, I've managed to book her in on Monday morning for a full check up, hopefully she'll last the 1.5 hour drive into town.

I guess they'll run the diagnostics, and find out the cause, and I'll get a detailed report on what the hells been going on.

Thanks for all your help guys

I'd suggest logging the VVT angles prior checking the timing chain, tensioner & OCV's. :)
