They put in 2x HKS foam filters, guessing in a custom holder: iirc :)

I have the HKS dry in at the moment, needs a good wash. Apparently the was its contructed, it doesn't seal 100% and still lets dirt and dust into the intake. Can be fixed up, but i'd rather something that works out of the box.

I've currently got the Apexi dry in mine, but I just ordered the HKS dry (washable) from Phat a few days ago. We could have just done a swap!

That's what the Apexi looks like:

I found my factory airbox wasn't properly closed when I was replacing my BOV the other day, and holy crap is the connecting pipe a bitch. I see someone above has a nice Perrin hose, might have to get myself one of those too.

The other thing I noticed when looking at the stock airbox is that the two intake paths it has aren't exactly massive. Are there upgrades (particularly for the over-the-radiator intake) available for these? I got a good 10% extra airflow (as measured by the MAF) on my last car simply by increasing the size of the intake path into the stock airbox (with OEM parts, as a bonus).

Why not just go a $22 Ryco from SCA? Is there really that much difference in the filter material?
They certainly all look same (colour and sprayed logo aside).

I can't see the $80+ value in the same type of panel filter for some imagined extra throttle response.

it would be interesting to see if anyone has done a proper (independent) test to see the difference in airflow through the different filters.

Does the Ryco come with a sticker? There must be some form of more flow with a "perfomance" filter... there just must.

An interesting point.

There are only two real ways to improve flow through a filter:

1. Provide bigger holes in the filter material to let more air in. If your filter is a panel filter the same size as the stock paper filter, then this is what is being done. And bigger holes = more stuff other than clean air getting in to your engine.
2. Provide a larger surface area for the same (or smaller) hole size, increasing the overall surface area of the holes by simply providing more of them. This requires a larger filter element (and is one way that pod filters work, or a panel filter with either more folds of filter material or bigger folds [making the overall element "thicker"]).

In the end, all filtering is a compromise between airflow and filter effectiveness. The OEM paper filter is known to filter reliably (reliably enough for Subaru to warrant it as effective), if you're going to change it for performance purposes, I'd suggest you'd want to be sure that you're seeing a sizable improvement in flow by doing so (and from the pressure drop testing I've seen around filter replacement, I doubt you are).

MSR always recommends the standard Subaru air filter, he said they're the best.
All of the oil based filters evenly foul the air flow sensors and cause the engine to idle rough.
Mick said he recently tested a HKS filter in a clients car and he lost 3kw atw over OEM filter (unsure of what mods were on the car already)
