Starting to find my 500D a little limiting quality wise. Took these with a wide aperture and ISO400 and there's just so much noise :( Starting to look at getting a second hand 7D for about $900. Not sure if it's worth going for a full frame or not at this stage...

Also quite a bit of post processing. Is it too obvious?

Yeah that was just a result of the HDR, but I like the colour of the shadows so didn't bother toning it down.

Aha, quite noticeable. Even if I close the aperture to about f/11 and ISO100 which is as good as it gets it's still quite bad. That's only cropped about 5% too :(

i recently acquired a D600 which is a full frame. its quite amazing what ISO it can handle. i can shoot at 3200 and only see minor noise in some photos.

The d7000 also performs extremely well regarding noise at higher ISO's.

$900 is pretty expensive for a second hand 7D. Can't you buy the body for less than a $1k since the 6D came out? Grey of course.

Hi, I'm pretty new here and I only found this forum because I'm researching stuff to get my toy ready or sale... wish I'd come across the forum earlier!

So I want to get some awesome photos of the race car to keep forever (because it's an awesome car) but also need to get some shots that show it off for my car sales ad...

The biggest challenge I've had photographing my shiny black car is the reflections - it reflects everything around it!!! so I'm after some advice on the kind of location that will show off it's shiny beauty without the reflections detracting from the picture, here's a HDR shot I took recently, the car was filthy and it still shows off the surrounding landscape (admittedly this wasn't intended as a 'show' shot just playing with HDR)
Image

So I have a Nikon D7000 and a selections of lenses, Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, Nikkor 18-200mm and Nikkor 35mm 1.8 plus Sony NEX 5R with 16-55mm to shoot with, I very clean and shiny '07 Liberty GT STI to photograph - where should I shoot it, what angles and what shots for a record of the car for myself and the shots you would want to see if you were the buyer??

You can see some of my other photography here (I mostly shoot landscapes and wildlife):

A lot of people photoshop out the reflections or atleast reduce them.

Otherwise maybe try a very plain area like a factory wall

The problem is not the car, it's the location.
Go somewhere plain (empty carpark, alley way etc.) Or somewhere where the reflection is not bad to look at.
Don't HDR.

Thanks for the quick responses, I'm thinking an overcast day would be good and I'm trying to think of a good location without to much distracting surroundings. I want to show off the 'shiny' without detracting from the picture...

Also thinking I want the whole car in good focus - especially for the 'selling' shots - what kind of aperture would you suggest (I can shot on a tripod so it can be low speed for low light)

Hit up Port Kembla mate, there must be some side roads around there you can do a shoot.

Yeah just had a look and they're about $1000 new, I'll keep an eye out for one I think in case a good deal comes up. Seems the 7D can use my current lenses so I can just buy one good lens for what I want and still use the zoom lens I currently have :)

Look into a circular polariser for your camera to get rid of some reflections. Won't get rid of them all but it certainly helps!
Simple shots with no fancy effects seem to work best for selling a car. I use an aperture of f/11 to keep the whole car in focus (and get the clearest image) but that varies with the lens you use.
