Phat GT Dump Pipe For The MY07 GT

Show off what mods you've done to your car.

Well with the Phat DP, custom full 3" pipes all the way thru to the fuji mufflers.. I cant agree that mine is that loud in the cabin. I admit and im sure most of you agree that its loud on full throttle outside my car, but i can barely hear anything in the cabin.

Must be the HKS premium exhaust or bigger turbo.

I will tell you next month whether the noise levels in the cabin changes.

Phil.

That's great, but unfortunately that's not an option for us MY07-MY08 folks with the BL9 (2.5t w/single scroll).

On top of which I don't need it any noisier than it is now, which is still very civilised. And besides, I'm very happy with the 'seat of pants' power increase.

my mistake.. apologies.

OEM dump pipes have so much restriction with the backing plate. What you are hearing that is different is the spool up is earlier now and more gases exiting at a higher rate. It wont get any louder unless you change mufflers.

did you get a retune to ensure you dont get any spiking.

nextmod wrote:I still reckon there should be 2 cats like the standard dump, on one of the cars I've done with a bigger turbo, this dump pipe and HKS premium exhaust. It was very droney on highways and sitting at the back seat was unbearable. probably be the same with the AVO dump.
Might of been the turbo, but still it was pretty bad.

Well, I've ridden in lib33rty's car with the HKS Silence catback exhaust, and I have to say it was a bit loud inside with a bit of drone (don't kill me, Eka). But this is compared to stock, STi, and K2's.

Now change the DP to a more free flowing model with 1 less cat, there's bound to be a good deal of increased noise level because the gases are flowing more quickly. Even to the point of being unbearable. That's why I love the K2's. Pretty quiet to start with, so it all balances out once you fit the DP on.

I think Franky has that setup, and Norm is about to do the same, where they upgrade the DP and the centre pipe but retain the STi mufflers.

Adam, keep in mind the one from Tangcla is for the 2.0t twin scroll, while the Phat one is for the 2.5t single scroll.

BTW Jim, what is that yellow thing hanging down towards the back of your new DP?

Haha. That? That's the O2 sensor. I took the picture before the installer plugged it back into the pipe.

Ahh, that's good to hear. I've always associated noise with the volume and speed of the exhaust gases. The greater volume and speed of the gas, the louder it's going to get. That's why when you have a restrictive cat that slows down gases or a chambered muffler that slows it even more, it's going to be quiet.

Not yet. I'm still enjoying the punch that I get now, plus the boost controller is doing well to control things even at 17 psi. But I'm considering other places to get my Haltech re-tuned.

I normally don't bad mouth retailers or shops, but Pulse Racing really gave me crappy service. Not only had Paul flown off to Queensland by the time I came back to pick up my car, but the other guy just printed out the dyno, threw it at me, and off I went. No explaination. No feedback. No nothing. I had to call them back a few days later asking them to explain the dyno results to me. On top of which I probably got the lowest increase from the tune compared to everyone, no doubt due to him rushing through it to catch his flight that day.

Adam in relation to your question, that yellow thing is the O2 sensor. My wire was spilt when I first installed the DP, thus the reason of activating the engine light which led to no S# mode or cruise control. This lead to long term testing and research. After 3 different visits to 3 different Subaru dealerships, none where able to give us an answer as to why S# didnt work and was told i had to retain a stock exhaust.

After all this fuss, Phat told me that he thinks we should just replace the O2 wiring harness. So we did and walah! All sorted. Was not the DP all along.

After Paul (MY07GT STi) drove my car last night, he said that with just the DP and EVC he felt it free'd up the engine completely with much better response and acceleration.

Yeah, I feel the DP is much more restrictive than the exhaust. So if anything, change the DP first, and if you like the noise how it is with the stock or STi exhaust, keep it at that. Otherwise for more noise get a performance exhaust afterwards.

Hm.. I haven't had many passenger in the car, sounds like I should get more opinion. To me it sounded nice.

Ah.. see, opinion changes, I remember you telling me how quiet it is, and how you fancy your HiTech instead.

Sorry, that's just my opinion when compared to my K2 setup. Plus I'm not as tolerant to noise now that I'm approaching my golden years. :hi:

Opps. Should have said I love them now compared to before I had upgraded the dump pipe. They really were quiet compared to the HiTech's, and I was a bit disappointed I paid so much money for a near stock noise. But since putting in the DP, the quietness has balanced out the extra noise from the DP, so it all worked out well in the end. So my opinion changed as the configuration changed, so not quite a backflip.

But my point was that the Fujitsubo's are quieter than the HKS inside the cabin, so if you were to add a DP to both systems, the Fujitsubo won't be as loud as the HKS afterwards.

Thanks for the discussion boys I am still tossing between the HKS silent and the Fuji's so I keen to hear anyone else that has heard both.

Has one kept the standard exhaust but for the down pipe, be it from PHAT GT, AVO, MRT, etc?

(I'm particularly intereseted in Lib STi owners or those that have the quad STi mufflers)

Cheers

I believe Franky (XRC15T) has the STi mufflers with a performance dump pipe and custom centre pipe. Norm (libsti) is getting a HKS dump pipe, larger centre pipe, but keeping his STi mufflers as well.

The STi mufflers already give a decent note already. A dump pipe upgrade should make it even deeper and a bit louder. A good combination for anyone not too keen on a loud setup.

Daniel, if your question is leading towards sound, then dont forget, ones a 2.0lt and the others 2.5lt They will sound completely different to each other.
