I am now going to have oil pickup nightmares  It gets me that what would appear to be a simple engine part... could cause a major problem!

It would be interesting to know what the failure rate is according to Subaru for this problem. Of course I doubt anyone would disclose that info even if they knew! A manufacturer will only admit there is a problem if it happened more than 1% of production, and even then it wouldn't be public knowledge.

I wish you all kind blessings from the big end god lol may your bearings never cease and may your oil pump freely :D

An engine failure is a good excuse for a rebuild with forged internals. An extra 100kw always comes in handy :D

I have never seen in 20 years of servicing / building / stripping subaru engines a broken oil pick up
thats 20 years of pulling down JDM engines and AU engines

Possibly, the USA suffer from more expatiation gaps in there concrete roads than we have here.
Has any one seen a broken one in the land down under ?

knock and oil starvation are the biggest two. Our engines sit flat so high-g corners the oil accumulates in the heads and can't back into the sump. Generally not a problem on the road. But on the track it is an issue.

It isnt just our engines that have this problem. I blew a type R and a s2000 because of this. That's why I always recommend a baffled sump

I've seen a cracked pickup once. Guys at work have seen them multiple times.

My my07 GTB is currently at Subaru docklands having its' cracked oil pickup replaced. I think I was very lucky to catch it before it failed completely.

Was very lucky I guess. Had been having issues for a couple of weeks with a CEL to do with the AVCS. Had installed new OCVs a couple of days prior which had sorted most of my issues but when logging the car the cam angles still weren't synced 100%. Also had some ticking noises at certain rpms/load that I thought was worn cam sprockets from the faulty OCV.

Fast forward a couple of days and as I was taking off from traffic lights on the way to work saw my oil pressure light flash off out of the corner of my eyes. Pulled in the closest servo and checked the oil level which was 3/4 full. Topped it up anyway and didn't see it again and could replicate the ticking anymore.

Did my research and had a gut feeling that the issues I'd been having may have come back to low oil pressure. Research told me that the oil pressure light basically meant "engine fucked" so was pretty concerned at this point. Organised to drop it into Subaru and insisted they inspect the oil pickup. They found a crack in the pipe so had to order a replacement.

They did say that there was some fine metal in the oil pan but they cleaned it all out and flushed the engine and that it all will be fine now. Car has been running fine since then. Fingers crossed

If you don't want nightmares don't read this before going to bed http://www.killerbmotorsport.com/index_files/OilPickupStory.htm

^ SHIT! Golf clap to you sir..... Well done for your persistance.
How did Subaru respond to this? Any compensation in terms of covering the costs involved?

There are a few of us with OCV issues, but replacing them seems to clear it all up. But maybe not

They didn't offer any compensation and I didn't ask. Just wanted the car fixed. My car is a late 06 build so long out of warranty. If the end result had of been more serious then I may have pushed for compensation given the evidence of a possible design flaw in the pickup on the internet.

mine went at 52k, had been log book serviced by subaru since new, stock as a rock. i thought it might of been a defect in the manfacture of the bearing itself. new short block and turbo for free tho so happy days

Is it a big job to replace? I've got some work coming up, I'm seriously considering an after-market pickup just to head off this potential problem before it hurts me...
