N/A Gen 3 CAI

Postby SSIKness666 » Mon May 20, 2013 6:57 pm

I have used the advanced search and used these key words: +gen 3 +cold air intake +cai +gen3
I didn't get any good search results.

I recently got a quote for a CAI for my MY02 RX from Exhaust Technology (SA) for $320 with install and K and N pod filter. When I asked whether the pod filter would be situated down near the front bumper intake, I was told by Mark (owner) that he would keep it in the engine bay, and that by introducing too much cold air, one would have to start changing the ignition timing.

Now with my basic knowledge on the logical application for a cold air intake, it doesn't make sense to have it up higher in the engine bay where the filter will draw in warm air, which to me, defeats the purpose of 'COLD' air intake.

Can anybody vouch or disprove this claim?

Does anybody have a DIY they could share for all of us Gen 3 owners?

Thanks.

Are you trying to make your engine more powerful or simply doing for the bling?

By the way the search engine on phpbb forums don't accept words that are less than 4 characters, to get around this simply google the following 'site:forum.liberty.asn.au gen3 cai'

Definitely not for the bling. The noise increase I have been told to expect is actually a turnoff. I am considering a CAI for the logical and practical application for putting colder, better quality air into the engine for better combustion. Unless of course I've got it all wrong and I don't know anything.

Save your money mate. Go to Bunnings and buy some flexy pipe or PVC piping. You can get some intercooler piping from an Auto store if you want some bling. Anyone who tells you it makes a difference just can't admit they spent money for no increase. It makes more noise, and sounds like you are going faster I guess. I've tried the DIY PVC pipe and besides sounding absolutely s**t, it make absolutely FA difference.

I don't care for bling.

How then is a CAI setup different on forced induction cars?

What car did you do this on? Can you comment on the placement of the filter, as from what I was told at Exhaust Technology, keeping the filter in the engine bay would be drawing in the surrounding warm air, thus defeating the concept of COLD air intake.

I should have been more specific sorry. I am only commenting relating the the EJ25 in our Gen 3's. I'm assuming (someone correct me if I am wrong) The location that air is taking from (i.e in the engine bay, down low behind a bumper/ inner guard) isn't as important in forced induction as it is an a N/A engine because forced induction cars run an intercooler to cool the 'charged air' therefore, it does not matter what temp the air is when it enters the beginning of the intake?

The car I used was a 2000 Gen 3 RX (EJ25). Still using the same OEM panel filter and the original intake scoop that draws air though the grill. Used a Y piece just after the big snorkel bit and attached another pipe than ran down through where the blanking plate is on the drivers side of the engine bay, down into the inner wheel guard.

There is zero benefit of a c/a on a N/A. Zero. The only thing it does is change the throttle response. But then you loose top end torque. If your not in It for bling and you don't like the noise, don't bother.
Buy a decent panel filter and reap those benefits.
Apparently i've never been on live television before
