recently got my car serviced at stechnic and they broke the news to me that my turbo was on its way out. they said it was making a weird noise and felt down on power. they didn't have a thorough look to see the actual turbo impeller blades or to see if there was much shaft play, but they were quite sure that the turbo was on its way out.
this was quite shocking to me as I only got the car a few weeks ago and it has barely done 50,000km. my cars an 08 GT-B with perfect service history. I also have not heard of this 'weird' noise prior to the service, the only noise I could hear was the standard subtle turbo spool. on the way home I heard something that is definitely mechanical, I took it to stomps (member on this forum) to have a listen and he was also quite sure the turbos fucked as his made the same sound when his turbo died.
the next day i took it to my dealer (still under statutory warranty) and told him the deal, unfortunately I couldn't recreate that mechanical sound on boost, but they still had a look at it. They couldn't find anything wrong with it, to suggest that the impellers were touching the housing, i didn't believe them so I drove up and had a look myself. I checked for all signs of shaft play at the inlet impeller, and it had absolutely no shaft play (quite weird because from what I understand, there's meant to be at least a tiny bit of play?). There were no signs of contact on the housing.
So I took the car home and there was no noise, seemed fairly standard. took it over to stomps again and had a bit of a play, to see if it was running slower than it should, did a few standing 0-100 runs and he said it ran pretty similarly to his liberty. We unplugged the battery and drained the power just incase there was some bad fuel and there was some knock, was all good.
today I noticed that mechanical noise on boost again.. anyway here's a video and some pictures just to show what im talking about
