No gears after motor install?

Postby MILK » Sat May 04, 2013 8:06 pm

I'm after a little help. I've recently dropped a 97 wrx into my 93 RS Liberty and now my clutch doesn't seem to engage. I've pushed the clutch fork back towards the firewall, and heard a click, but I can still push it forward again easily. I had to bleed the clutch a little as it lost pressure, but it is rather firm now. I checked carefully with a pen torch and could see that the fork was in the tabs on the throw out bearing. I can also see the bearing move in and out when some one presses the clutch for me. It LOOKS as though it's working, but I can't get it into gear once the motor is running... it just grinds. I've fiddled with it for 3 days. Taking the fork out of the bearing, and seating it back in etc.. all to no avail... I thought I'd better lay some posts on the internet in case people have a brilliant idea before I drop the gear box!

Thanks for any input and suggestions!

Option 1:

Does it let you select a gear when the engine is off? And is it only grinding when you try to select a gear when the car is running?

If yes to both of these it sounds like your release bearing is not pushing up against the pressure plate/diaphragm hard enough to allow the clutch plate to disengage from the flywheel.

Release bearing throw out is not correct or pressure plate has an issue - is it a new clutch kit (including new pressure plate?)
Option 2:
Try the following if you can get into a gear (try 1st or reverse) MAKE SURE that no one or anything else is in front/behind the car and then hit the key with the clutch pedal pressed in.

If the car lurches either forward or backward then your pressure plate is not releasing for some reason.

Did you change clutch style? Ie push vs pull?
