Mine has a cheap 12" boss in the shelf, thinking of another amp to run it or going back to and 8" running of the stock amp

I just bought one from elite-electronics. Was $179 with free postage so seemed like a good deal to me. They also have DVC version at the same price if you want to run your amp at 2 ohms. I already have a beefy Alpine amp that gives me 300W RMS at 4 ohms so I stuck with the single voice coil version... will see how it goes when it arrives.

How have you blokes gone with your Polk MM840 subs?

I got my rear PS lined with dynamat on the weekend and its reduced most of the vibration to a certain volume point but there is still some residual vibration there which I have boiled down to it being the stock sub dying if not dead.

So eventually i will need a new sub and the Polk Audio SVC option is on the cards as I want to run the stock amp with it.

So hows the clarity and reliability of the sub itself?

Yeah my stock sub was ripped and had clear silicon where the previous owner tried to save it. LOL.

It's a great little sub. Good range and clarity for an 8 inch sub. I was well impressed. It's really good at live music like rock/jazz and does well with some synthetic music like drum and bass but I've found some really bassy types like rnb, hip hop and dubstep can push it a bit too much when running free-air (which is what happens in the parcel shelf). Ideally it should be in an enclosure and I'll probably do that eventually. I read a lot of threads saying it's a marine grade sub (which it is but that doesn't mean free air and polk state it should be in an enclosure for best results).

Definitely recommend it but I can't comment of how it runs with the stock amp as I've got an alpine amp providing ample juice.

I think, from memory, the sub is actually designed as a IB (infinite baffle) sub. An enclosure won't aid the sun much at all. When it comes to IB subs, mounting is the key for best performance. And clean power.

... With 250 Watts continuous/500 Watts peak power handling, the MM840 is recommended for small sealed (.35 cubic foot) enclosures.

When I was reading up on them, quite a few posts where from peeps that were still using the stock amps. They all seemed happy with the upgrade. Ideally you'd get a better amp (and think about a sealed enclosure like I am) but for a quick replacement it's still well worthwhile.

Be ready to make/buy a spacer though. Without it the sub is too meaty and hits the boot bars. I think I went 8mm and one bar still just touches when closed.

Thanks Allen. At this point I want to get rid of the vibration. I don't push the volume too hard personally. If I was going all out I'd go bigger amp and sub mounted in the boot.

Im hoping the polk sub will handle progressive house and dance music with clarity.
