2.0L 5spd Auto Liberty GT MY06 - Max RPM question

Postby Patton55 » Thu Dec 06, 2012 8:21 pm

Greets all,

Hoping one of the mechanical gurus can answer a quick question. I have the 2.0Litre 5spd auto Liberty GT MY06 and was wondering when you drop into manual mode is there a safety engine cutout/limiter or auto retardation at or near maximum RPM to prevent engine damage if you stay in gear too long and bounce at the redline?

Thanks
Patton

Yes.

AFAIK: You will experience boost cut and then fuel cut, it'll feel like you've hit a brick wall. Don't do it, I have  .

I have an o5 GT auto 12 months ago I borrowed a G teck metre and did
Standing starts to 100 Ks in Manuel, auto, and sports. After two runs in
each mode I found that sports was the quickest each time. There is no
advantage in revving it right out.

I've noticed when mine hits redline in manual mode it shifts up by itself. Did that only come in post fl ?

No. In D it's normal mode, flick it over into the manual gate and that's sports, and once you change gears manually (either with gearlever or on steering wheel) you'll have full control over it, and it'll hit redline and bounce of the limiter (if you don't change gear first!)

Oh, yeah, that's a failsafe thing so you dont just bounce the redline for ages and ruin your engine.. Can't say I've tried it myself but I do recall something along those lines.

This is nothing to be proud of, but I've done it more times than I'd like to admit.

It reaches a limit near redline then shifts up a gear for you.

This is a logical behavior for an auto, since moving the shift lever into the 'manual' selector position in most cars is nothing more than ''sports' mode automatic. I was actually (plesently) surprised that Subaru have a true manual mode, not a sports mode with the ability to change gears.

I often leave the car in manual mode with cruise activated to stop it from down-shifting and making a heap of noise every time I go up a hill, but then forget its in manual mode when I stop at lights - it shifts back to 1st automatically, and I'm alerted to the fact that it's in manual mode when it redlines 1st before changing to 2nd at about 60km/h.

What can I say.... I used to be a good driver.
