H6 3.0 - Lack of checking = Engine Carnage

Dropz, if the H6 is overfilled with oil (say 5mm above the max line on dipstick) would that cause any damage?

Asking because if one already knows the H6 eats some oil, one could deliberately overfill by a bit for some extra margin of safety, if that doesn't cause any damage that is.

I wouldn't believe so. It's only a couple hundred ml. If you put like an extra litre in that could do so but an extra 3-400ml would be fine. I put 5l in my current lib whereas it takes 4.5l.

Will my car used to consume oil like yours but once one piston ring get damaged and get a new short block assembly, the oil consumption is almost non. I used a Castrol Edge 5W40 oil all the time and the change interval is every 10-15K km.
My cars short block was replaced at 13K km and now I already have around 240K km on my odo. I remembered also that I managed the new engine break in for around 5000 km instead of 1600 km.

Certainly do, much like Repco, but better. IMO its on par with Castrol, but some people want a brand name so I use castrol.

just got back from local mechanics for unrelated matter. noticed a subi forrester with the bonnet up sitting in driveway. asked the boys about it who proceeded to show me a hole the size of a 20 cent piece in the motor with what looked like the 'oil version' of the port arthur shooting masacre all over the rest of the motor - owner had not checked level, let it run dry and continued to hammer the car. CHECK YOUR OIL IF YOU OWN A SUBARU. im quite paranoid now but thats better than fronting the bill for a new engine.

Same. Admittedly I only checked it every month or two but no matter how long it's been since an oil change (max 7ish months) the level is always chockers.

I'm in the same boat! Engine was broken in correctly I guess? I also am very good about letting her warm up properly every time I drive her

Could also have something to do with how you drive/conditions you drive in perhaps? The more engine braking you do the more oil you'd be likely to use?

What is the difference between oil designed for diesel engines and petrol engines? I have 70 to 80L of Vanellus Multi Fleet SAE 15W-40 in containers (wife's car is a turbo diesel Nissan Elgrand) and am wondering if this is OK to use in a MY01 3.0 Outback?

Better to ask the question now than find out the hard way!

Diesel oils have more detergents and cleaning agents in them as they are very dirty.

I'd stick to petrol oils. The only conditions ive heard of someone using diesel oil is after having a blown head gasket fixed, and that is only temporary to help clean it out.
