It's definitely legit EcuTek, it was in fact done at S&J, which is where I'll be taking it.

EcuTek might be the devil but the car moves pretty nicely...

Also, I'm running on United Premium E10 100 RON now and some how my fuel consumption numbers have dropped from 11.8 L/ km to 11.4 L/ km.

I've got a Kido Tune. The car is a little bit more rev happy but as a compromise tad harder to cold start.

Not sure how or why this is. I imagine the extra RON means the car is more efficient in accelerating and thus I'm off the throttle more.

But yes, instantaneous numbers on a 0-60 "launch" even in economy mode is frightening - never really under 30L /km until you hit around 50.

Actually, most petrol engines are more efficient with wide open throttle.
I assume you are only resetting the trip-meter when you fill the tank. Why don't you try resetting it more often, and changing your driving style each time to quickly see what works best?
If you switch from "average" display to "instant" when you're cruising on a flat freeway, you should see figures between 5 - 7 l/100

Hence why the factory tune limits airflow by advancing the cam at low throttle angle to induce EGR to 'not' filling the cylinder which means no wasted torque or fuel:air. Unfortunately, the stock tune pulls so much timing that the car loses performance, part throttle torque and overall throttle response :(

Mine is now with S+J in Adelaide for some TLC - after resetting the ECU inner city economy jumped up from about 16-17ish to 20ish litres per 100kms (!!!). Given that it currently costs nearly $100 to fill this thing up with 98 at the moment, I need to get more than 300kms out of a tank!

Is anyone out there with a 2005-2006 r-b driving in very congested urban traffic? I would estimate that driving to work and back the average speed for me (over about 6km) is in the order of 20km/h. I accept that this will be slaughtering efficiency, but seriously, 20l/100km... I'd love to hear from anyone with the same car and driving in the same conditions.

20L/per 100 is hugee!
before i got my kido tune i was sitting at around 14-15
now with kido tune i range from 11-13
with the same style of driving

The really funny thing is that I get pretty much the same fuel efficiency regardless of whether I drive like a sedated grandma, shifting at 2000rpm, pedal never more than a third down and coasting like I'm running out of petrol, or foot to the floor hammering it up to near the redline like I'm driving... well, an r spec b.

That says to me that whatever is going on, it relates to the way the car burns fuel at low RPM.

I took it up through the Adelaide Hills to Lobethal, which is an epic twisty road, heaps of shifting 2nd through 4th, lots of heavy acceleration, lots of hills, and I got significantly better fuel economy than tip toeing through the flat inner suburbs into the CBD without ever breaking 3000rpm. Cruising on a flat main road with no traffic at 60 in 5th or 6th fuel economy improves to something in the order of 10l/100km. Out on the highway at 110, it's down to 7-8l/100km.

Hopefully S+J can sort it out, they certainly seem to know their stuff. Went in a couple of weeks ago which was when the ECU was reset, but they couldn't find anything obvious.

Hmm sounds far too high - have you considered your O2 sensors?

Hey mate,
I filled up in the city last week and reset the trip meter, over about 20km's, the consumption was 15 (i think) and i was stop start the entire way with a max speed of say 20-30kmh at points.
Changing gear under 2500rpm- and the car is tuned.

Hope that helps

I've been monitoring mine for a while and keep resetting one of the tripmeters/consumption figures. I do mainly stop/start inner city with a few kms on highway where I can get to 70-75 km/h. I often have 3 on board with cricket gear etc or a dog as well in the back.

I have a 3.0R auto wagon pre-face (without SI Drive) and I'm getting 12.4 - 12.6 most of the time. One set had a fair bit of freeway at 100 km/h and for 1000 km was sitting on 11.8.

I recently moved house and was towing a 8X5 foot twin axle trailer with fridges, cupboards big flower pots etc and the car got really hot a few times. I tried to show off a few times how my big rig would outpace the Magnas etc. Figures for that week sat around 13.0 mostly urban stuff and has now returned to 12.6.

My car isn't tuned and I'm chasing a Kido tune some time soon I hope as I really want to get closer to 11s with spirited driving and 10s conservatively.

With 98PULP rarely if ever under $1.50 i really want the economy so I can justify keeping the car long term. It annoys me sometimes when V8s get better numbers, especially the new Holden AFMs but they can't keep up in the wet... The extra weight of the AWD doesn't help though.

It doesn't matter where you are I reckon if your figures are >15 with normal driving the car has an issue that needs sorting out.

2006 my07 h6 spec b, always driving in sports shift and plenty of WOT.. have owned it for four months I reset the ecu when I got it and have never gone over 9/100...
I'm not in the city so not a heap of stop/start but if u are in that situation sitting around 12-13/100 would be normal ..
for people higher then that I would definitely recommended getting a can of MAF cleaner and cleaning the sensor..
was the first thing I did before driving the car...
usually get around 550+ from a tank

S&J have measured every variable possible and confirmed that the O2 sensors were working properly by testing the exhaust with their own equipment. So it's not that.

According to them everything else they are able to test is working perfectly too. They re-tuned it on the dyno yesterday and it's now producing a peak of over 150kw at the wheels (this is with after market exhaust). Presumably if anything was going radically wrong in the engine you wouldn't get near that kind of power, plus the curves are nice and even all the way through the range too. They said that if anything it's running a tad lean in places.

We discussed whether the dash display is as much of a POS as it appears to be. I've done runs based on litres in at filling/kms driven on odo before, but I'm going to do a few more now and see what numbers they come out at and how they compare to the on board display.

So in summary, a retune plus a reassessment of whether I'm calculating economy correctly will hopefully yield some results. Otherwise I'm going to have to conclude that it's just a horribly inefficient car to drive in stop start traffic (in which case I'm going to get in a lot of trouble as it was between the Liberty or a diesel Golf). Albeit one that now sounds utterly awesome and produces stupid amounts of power...

Thanks - that is helpful. So that's based on the on board display, not your own calculation?

I'm wondering whether my trip distance is a factor. The car is definitely less efficient when cold. If you're driving 20km in those conditions whereas I'm doing more like 6-7km, mine must be barely warm by the time I turn it off again. So I'm probably doing a lot of kms total with the car "cold".

I agree, but then again, what is "normal" driving? I've noticed in this thread a few people talk about higher figures as though they are insane and indicate the car has a major issue, but then when you read further, these same people tend to be doing highway kilometres or driving around cities on ring roads or the like.

My usual commute involves no cruising at all. I.e., no phases of driving where the car is in 4th or 5th for longer than a few seconds. Probably a gear change every 15-20s on average, and either accelerating or braking perhaps 90% of the time (as opposed to maintaining speed).

So take a cold car, and drive while constantly up and down shifting at no more than 50km/h and with an average of around 20km/h, and eliminate all parts of the drive when you cruise to any degree. Then as soon as it warms up, turn it off until it's cold again. Then repeat. I'm starting to suspect a lot of people posting in this thread would find their mileage up around 15l/100kms in that scenario.

In short - one of the problems with working out if there is a problem is the inability to compare apples with apples!
