munch munch turbo for lunch- replacement advice please

Postby Stomps » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:00 pm

So my lib munched a turbo (vf46) yesterday,

Threw two codes (AVCS left and AVCS right) Then horrible noises and voilà, no boost

The car has been meticulously maintained since I've had it, dunno about previous owner. .

So, throw ideas at me about replacements. . (What, price, where to buy)

I'm not chasing numbers but I'm happy to go larger. . Its only a daily so not keen to spend huge money, especially given its also due for its 125k...

Cheers

Bummer!
Any ideas on what the cause was?
Blocked oil feed? AVCS failure?
Have you dropped the oil for evidence of bits?
If the engine runs can you please log AVCS, & OCV duty and current?
As you may know I'm suffering from AVCS issues, thus the interest.

I'd recommend a VF52 brand new from Celtic, similar response to VF46 but more top end on offer.
Add a new in-tank filter and DW65c pump if req'd.
Theres also a S/H VF44 hybrid going on IIRC rexnet or wrxclub right now.

Hey,

Car is with Stechnic at the moment... They were baffled... we checked for blocked oil feed but the feed line still had bulk pressure, certainly enough not to fuck a turbo...

Cant really log anything coz I don't have a cable etc.. we scanned for codes at the shop. . They initially thought it was gonna be blocked filter when it initially threw the turbo side code, but then when it threw both they were wondering WTF??

They are gonna check oil pressure and inspect the turbo today, but we took it for a drive with laptop plugged in and boost was non existent. ..

How much is the VF52 posted to Oz?

I should also add, given its my daily, I need it fixed ASAP, so can't really wait around for used. .

Worse comes to worse, there is a 46k vf46 on ebay for $400... but I'm not sure if I want to risk used..

VJ is about to put his AVO380 up for sale. Great little turbo. Bolt on for your car.

Any chance you could confirm:
- existence of filters in the AVCS and or turbo oil feed lines (MY07 2.5t yeah)
- state of filters lines regarding sludge or blockages.

Cheers for the PM, I'm having similar thoughts...

They will be inspecting the lines... he did mention that every time they get to the stage of pulling a motor down enough, they remove the filters because they constantly block up... ill see them later this arvo and get back to you. .

Re: the 380.. who is VJ? I don't really know the over east people.. can you point me in their direction. .

Cheers

I'm requesting a ban on any AVCS post from you until you actually sort your problem. Less yappin, more action. :P

Hey man,

Is that a direct fit? How much are you after for it and how soon could I get it?

Only asking how long coz the car is currently in pieces at S technic and if its not for a while, I'll need to tow it home..

Please let me know ASAP,

cheers mate..

I also emailed and repeatedly called Celtic... (then came to my senses and realized it was midnight over there)

Hopefully they will let me know about a vf52..

A VF52 should be about $1300 landed.
I would recommend a ball bearing turbo if you can afford it (Garrett)
