Pirelli Pzero 225/40/18

Some of you may know, i recently upgraded to GT 18inch wheels and wrapped some Pirelli Pzero rubbers around them.

Previous rims and tyres: OEM 17 inch wheels, 225/50/17 Yokohama A10
New rims and tyres: OEM 18 inch GT wheels, 225/40/18 Pirelli PZero

Just had them installed on to the car today and Payless tyres, mounted on to the rim, wheel balance and installation. Drove the car out of the Payless, felt a bit wobbly. But a few minutes of driving on my usual route to work it stopped feeling wobbly, i guess they broke in.

I could immediately feel the differences on the roads i take to work, compared to the stock Yokohama A10s that are on the 17s. Cornering is much flatter and the car didn't lean through corners as much as it did on the Yokohamas (im guessing this is due to the smaller sidewall on the 18s) and less road noise and no squealing through corners at mid pace. Got to test the grip thoroughly on these tyres because some moron didn't indicate out of a round-a-bout, slammed the brakes at about 30-40km/h, no squeal, stopped on a dime.

Pros:
- Relatively good grip
- Lower profile, less sidewall flex (less "swaying" through corners)
- Cheap (if you look around)

Cons:
- Smaller circumference than stock (Speedometer error by 3%, not much.. i guess)
- Expensive, if bought at retail
- If kept in the car, leave a nasty rubbery smell lingering in your car haha

Nice write up Eric. It would be interesting to hear your opinions when you really push the limits in corners with these tires. What did it cost you to get them fitted and balanced?

Will do, just need a chance to drive the car..somewhere.. quiet.. haha. $100 for fitting and balancing all four.

OK. I had P Zero Nero previously which were not up to the same quality when pushed compared to my Potenza RE050A's before them.

There are 2 types of P zero's.

The Nero and the Rosso!!

Big difference in performance and price from memory. Cant remember if its the Nero thats the hard cheaper one!!

Daniel there are actually 4 types (in order of performance): P Zero Nero, P Zero Rosso, P Zero Asimmetrico (what Eric bought) and P Zero Corsa System

I guess the Pzero Nero's arnt the best out of the lot. I might be hyping up the tyres i bought, as i haven't any experience with other performance tyres. But I'll continue to report on these as i put them through their pace and i'll upload some proper pictures later on, iphone camera sucks..

if its an improvement over the last set of tires you bought, it cant be a bad thing. It comes down to how much more you paid over previous tires.

Theyre a huge upgrade, the car handles much better than the stock 2.5i wheel & tyre combo. Now when it comes to buying tyres, i definitely wont be skimping out on a set.

So far i've put it through some corners mid-high pace around homebush. Sits flat through corners, i'm far more confident in pushing the car a bit more with the new tyres. I think the next upgrade to come are coilovers and uprated bushings

The difference between the Neros and Rossos is pretty ridiculous really, the Neros are just not in the same class and it is definitely worth the extra money for the Rossos if you like handling, particularly in the wet.

Comfort wise, they are on par I think, although there is slightly more road noise from the Neros. Also, I've heard that tyre wear is actually worse on the Neros believe it or not.

I am also talking from experience, I have had both.

Yesterday night i refilled the tyres with air because the car started handling a bit funny, swaying/wobbling, trailing small grooves in the road and poor braking performance.

They all read 36 psi except the back left tyre which was reading at 37. Topped them back up to 40psi, and they were back to what they were when i first put them on. Maybe thats why i was beaten by an Audi A6 haha

I usually keep mine between 36-39 PSI.........and never go lower than 36psi
