I didn't drop the oil/filter in my old 93 Civic for about 50,000k's, drove like a charm until someone wrote it off for me.

^^^thats bad and I'd say that car would have been fucked sooner than later. Oil does break down into carbon deposits and it ends up in ya oil pick up.. Seen many cars die this way, happens way too much

Would a thinner oil reduce the likelihood of AVCS filter clogging issues? Not even sure I have this issue but several ppl seem to have encountered this. Is 10/30 too thin? Just posting in a lot of threads today because it is rainy and I am bored :p

Thicker is recommended for masking the out of sync AVCS inlet cam gear issue: 10w40, 10w60 or even those in 15w...
Delvac or similar oils with an aggressive detergent pack may help too.
From research, there are no filters in the AVCS control oil lines in postFL 2.5t.

But the ultimate solution is apparently just to replace both avcs inlet cam gears, and use an oil with agressive detergent pack on a sub 5k OCI.
Not the oil pump, not the avcs solenoids although the latter is supposed to be relatively easy to do...
I've seen proof in my logs, the AVCS inlet cam gear angles are closely matched under acceleration, but deviate (one side's angle oscillates through its entire range, whilst the other holds steady when cruising at 100kph within a 2300-3500rpm rev range, 4th through 6th.
If heavier oil doesn't mask or fix the issue, I may take a peek at the solenoids before replacing both inlet cam gears, the latter next timing belt service...

Funny story....canola oil was originally designed for use in cars. Canadian oil = canola. Then they realised "Wait a minute! We can use this for cooking and make heaps more moneys!"....

Anyone up for a test drive?

Interesting.

Canola oil stands for CANadian Oil, Low Acid. The name was picked in 1978. Originally known as rapeseed oil and it was used to lubricate steam engines. The demand was high during the world wars but when the world war ended they sourced other uses for the oil and begun using it in foods.

Thanks for correcting dropz, I was told that by a mechanic friend who used to build racecars 50 years ago :D

I had never heard of it so I did a bit of googling out of interest. I love little facts like this!

I spoke to Ross Cromwood last week if he had heard of anyone using Delvac oil in the 2.5 turbo subarus and he said no. Might only be used by a few people with major engine work?

Ring Ross tomorrow and check again, I'm sure he's heard of one at least now.

LOL^^^

I'm not sold on the 15W40 Delvac though...particularly the 15W part. Like coyote said, it could be alright for a trackcar, but a daily driven there's just too much initial wear. From my mechanic friends the logic is - use thicker oil as the car gets older to help mask oil leaks etc. But our cars aren't that old to have leaks everywhere. Surely once Bruce changes the inlet cam gears, the 15W wouldn't be as necessary...bruce?

If anyone has some actual facts to back up this oil then please share? (ps. I mean besides the "aggressive detergent package" :assassin: )

Cheers :)

Ok I've just decided on my oil choice for the new motor as follows. Please keep in mind this is for my daily driven eflex / e85 powered high performance motor, so it won't be for everyone:

For general daily duties, will be using the following:

http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils ... oducts=277

Penrite full synthetic SIN10

I've used penrite before in other cars and have confidence in the product.

This particular one I like due to it being suitable to e85 use, carries an API SN compliant rating, and has "no shear" (read low shear) properties.

The 10w weight gives me confidence in oil flow at startup as its not too heavy, and for general commute the 40 SAE rating is not too thick that it won't provide enough flow at under 120 degrees oil temp which I doubt my car will see to and from work/ occasional squirt

Ideally I would've liked a 5w40 with an API SN rating an low / no shear properties but this is almost impossible to find in one combo so I believe the above is the best oil for the job at the moment.

This came close : http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.p ... roducts=13

but is not recommended specifically for e85 based vehicles - I'm waiting on an email from penrite to confirm although if it is then this is the oil for me. It's a 5w40 with API SN compliance, but no mention of shear characteristics. It is however recommended for diesel motors so it may be the hidden secret I've been searching for.

The following was also a consideration in my selection but I feel more comfortable to go with the racing 10w40 purely at this stage for its shear properties:

http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.p ... oducts=250

The above is penrites direct recommendation for e85 based flex fuel vehicles. It's a 10w

I may even test the two and see which fares better

The key here is that I will be changing oil every 3500-5000kms religiously. This is super important when using e85 or any ethanol based fuel where dilution is pretty much inevitable.

Importantly I should mention my new motor whilst used only has 15,000kms on it so still has tight clearances. Once (and hopefully if and when) it clicks over 50,000kms I'd go with the 10w40 for sure.

For the sake of info, I highly suggest those running motul / royal purple oil in any ethanol fueled car do a google search on these oils' comparability with ethanol before anything else....

For the track and race, where oil temps will be higher for longer, I think I'll be going with one of these:

- Penrite 15w50 race full synthetic : http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils ... oducts=278

- Amsoil 10w 60 full synthetic

Probably leaning toward the amsoil due to its 10w rating and the tight clearances in my jdm spec c motor requiring a lighter oil at the all important cold start up. Especially if track days are during winter to early spring months.

This oil will pretty much be put in the day before track day and dumped the day after

Hopefully this will help some others too.

Will keep you guys posted on my outcomes

I actually asked him specifically about you at the time and that you were planning on using the delvac oil but I don't think he was quite sure who I was talking about.
