Android Tablet Install

The vent surround is the one with the cubby so that was cut up and then fibreglassed to the shape in the photo, brackets where then made to hold the tablet in place. The tablet itself is a little too wide so the vent tunnels had to be cut to allow the tablet to fit.

Did you do all the fibreglassing and cutting yourself?

Yup I did all the fibreglassing myself, I just used a kit from bunnings.

What sort of tablet did you use? Does it need a SIM for GPS etc?

I'm not sure what tablet JaySTI30R is using in his picture but I used the nexus 7. The version I have of the nexus does not need a sim for GPS but if you would like turn by turn navigation you can either get a tablet that uses a sim for data and use the native google navigation app or pay for an app that does not need data such as sygic.

Also from what I've seen in the legacy gt forums there are some tablets that are slightly smaller that will not require any cutting of the vent tunnels.

Yea quite a few hours, most of it was spent sanding the fibreglass and bog down.

I can't quite give you exact hours as it was a side project and I worked on it when I had spare time.

Ive just finished a similar project and was thinking of doing a write up too, Is there enough intest for this?

Go Launcher - will have to have a look, anyhow - here is a pic of what I have done..

Looks awesome man. Yeh def do a full write up, I'm about to start planning my android tablet install and would be very interested to see the process you went with.
My biggest concern is the bezel, my fibreglassing skills haven't really been tested yet..

Just WOW. This is very ingenious. Does the cold air from the aircon have any effect on the tab, like condensation or anything, or even hot air overheating the tab?

Good to see all these tablet installs. Almost all of my parts are here now, aside from the trim bits (7" panel kits same as krosbow, and the info panel relocation kit). Have to do a little bench testing yet, I've gone a little crazy with added extras, I will be running a USB DAC for better sound quality, and SSD for extra storage in the centre console, and even a DVB digital TV tuner, all hooked up to the humble Nexus 7.

krosbow - did you have to cut into the air vent pipe to fit the charger cable into the USB port? If so did you seal it back up somehow? I'm wondering if I can just heat the plastic and deform it enough to make room, so I don't have to seal it back up.

Hey statts, yeah I had to cut into the RHS vent pipe, the right hand side has been cut from where it connects to the front fascia, to about 2.5 cm's back. The usb and audio wires are actually channeled down the rhs vent pipe, and are barely visible.

I have a heap of photos to go in the guide, maybe I just upload them first? Also the fascia panel is not anything special, definetley not a 7" nav bezel, just the standard cubby hut with some serious fabrication.

Also, it does sound like your going the full hog - nice!

No problems with cold or heat yet, I had the tablet in primed for about 3 weeks, with 5 or so days 35° + with no issues, i have also had some close to zero days once in and painted, and also haven't had any issues. The aircon gets incredibly cold, much more than i thought, it may chill the end of the tablet where the power connects in, but no issues, fingers crossed.

The tablet isn't a Nexus either, its a Freelander PD10 - http://dx.com/p/freelander-pd10-3g-7-ca ... -961167126

Didn't really want to shell out on a Nexus, till I knew what problems I'd have, although I did design my install to be able to be upgraded with a newer 7" tab.
